Lying in bed this morning having a coffee & trying to figure the new poly tunnel into my plot...which means I'll be changing the plan I'd already drawn up. Trying to keep the 'buildings' all at the one end due to where the sun rises & sets. This is what I've come up with so far...do brassicas & sweetcorn grow ok in a poly? I had my 'house of brassica' last year made from a gazebo frame & scaffolding net. Any thoughts on my new plot plan please?

I was also wondering about just getting rid of the shed & putting the poly in its place? The shed is rotted on the back panel & the back left side panel. As you can see on the picture below - its sinking badly. The door doesnt even shut & the window is dropping out. Does anyone manage without a shed? I have a tool shed & most bits are either in there or in the greenhouse - thoughts on this too?

I don't have a shed on my allotment, just a tool storage box:

@JWK - is that quite waterproof?
I'm looking for an alternative storage idea for my garden (but it needs to be able to handle the lawn mower_.

Yes it's waterproof, it's not ideal for me as I have to lay my spade and fork lengthways and it's not long enough for the rake. Mine isn't big enough for a lawn mower and if heavy would be awkward lifting it in, also it has a fairly flimsy plastic floor that can't take much weight. I just use it for small tools, string, labels etc.

I wouldn't recommend growing sweetcorn in a polytunnel, they grow very tall so need a high tunnel but the main reason is they are wind pollinated so you would have to pollinate them by hand if in a tunnel and that would be hit and miss.

                :)
I can later when I get home. The best I can do at the mo is the sun rises at the end of the plot & goes down behind the shed :snork:

Ah yes, forgot about that! This is why I love this forum:love30: thanks for that:)

What time of day was that pic of your plot taken as it already appears shaded where you tunnel would be sited?

Check how much shade the shed throws on the proposed polytunnel location in late afternoon, it'll be roughly the same in 2nd week March as end September.

If your patio was in front of the shed it would be relatively easier to construct a 'porch' to provide shelter from rain and sunshine, plus collect extra rainfall.

Not sure why I think so, but would the polytunnel be better off running East to West as opposed to North to South as per your plan? That way the length would benefit from maximum sunshine.

There was a member here named Kristen who successfully grew normal and baby sweetcorn in a greenhouse so I tried it two years running in one of my polytunnels, I had moderate success by shaking the stems to pollinate, but its been much better since I have grown them outside.

Added to that the second year I grew them under cover one of the plants burst through the cover and flowered outside which was rather comical, I cant find the pic that shows it sorry.

                          Steve...:)

I think Kristen's sweetcorn grew through the greenhouse too, didn't he have to take some panes out or I am thinking of someone else?

The picture was taken at 15:00. The shed is definitely going to have to come down as upon closer inspection yesterday, its riddled with wood worm. Why are some things never easy

The poly would run E/W where the shed now is, just wish the fella on the plot next door would prune that cherry tree! (The one to the left of the greenhouse as you look at the picture) Thats the cause of the shade:gaah:
