pruning

    Please can i have some advice on pruning the following climbers.
    In my garden i have a honeysuckle, solanum jasminoides and a clematis

    do they need pruning and if so when and how do i prune them?

    Both the Honeysuckle and the Solanum can be pruned in spring. If the honeysuckle is young them prune it lightly, but if it's taking over you can prune it back quite hard. The more you prune a Solanum the more growth it will put on, they can be quite rampant when established. Again prune lightly unless it's taking over.

    The Clematis is difficult to answer as they fall into pruning groups. Do you know the name of it please or when it flowers?

      With Solanum and Honeysuckle I generally trim them back to keep them in the space available.

      The RHS article below explains Clematis types and pruning method . Its not as complicated as it looks . If your flowers early (May ) it should not need pruning . I would give it a good feed mid-February when the buds show . Blood fish and bonemeal is good (if you don't have a dog ! ) also mix in some slow release feed , the stuff that looks like hundreds and thousands . :blue thumb:

      I was thinking about trimming my honeysuckle too but too hesitant as to when I should be doing it. Thank you for all your advice! :)
