I've been given this shrub, I saw the original in situ and it was more like a tree, perhaps 5-6m tall, with lots of bushy growth all around the base. I don't mind trimming to keep things in check, but I don't want to plant something that spreads with shoots underground so they're popping up everywhere!
I was told it was a laurel, but googling hasn't thrown up anything similar, thanks for any help :)

It looks like a portugese laurel from the photo.

They're not too fast growing Daisybelle, if the original was 5-6m tall, it's probably taken several years to reach that size. A little pruning once a year should keep it to the shape or size you want.

They don't usually produce many underground spreading shoots, any that do pop up can easily be removed by digging out or simply cutting them off at the base.

I think you're right, missed that in my first google! Should be fine then, I'm glad 'cos it's a really nice shrub, lovely glossy leaves :)
