    Hi longk,

For salvias, like Amistad and nactvlinder, what size pot do you think is best, I have both of these in medium size pots (I think about 5 litres) but guess I will need to up plant them this year, unless I knock of old compost and replant?

    Jack

If you're going to stick with pot culture I would pot up a size or two year on year.
Grow some spares from cuttings this year so that you can start planting out next year.

I would deffo start S.patens and maybe the seed from Amistad but I would wait on the others if space is an issue.

Amistad is sterile, apparently. Are you certain you have seed of this? If so, could be very interesting!

        Hi Nibor,

The plant that the seeds are off ( photo on last years Salvia thread post no 129 ), was bought from The Range and was labelled as Amistad.

I sowed seeds collected from my main S. Patens Cambridge Blue plant in a seed tray 2 weeks ago. The seedlings germinated well and are now large enough to handle by thumb and finger. Is it OK to pot these on, and do these seedlings come true, ie will they be the same as the parent plant? Also should I expect these new plants to flower this year?

If you have space pot them on into cells or small pots. They should come true. And yes, if the summer is reasonable they will bloom this year.

            Hi everyone :)

First of all can I apologise to @ARMANDII if this seems like an advert. I don't mean it to , I just want to pass the information on......

In this weeks Amateur Gardening Magazine there is an advert for Salvias from Hayloft Plants.

            I each of the following......

            Peach Parfait
            African Skies
            Royal Bumble
            Cerro Potosi
            Icing Sugar
            Christine Yeo
            Joy
            Amistad
            Peter Vidgeon
            Blue Note
            Nachtvlinder
            Hot Lips

All for £12 plus £4-95 p+p. Sent out as young plants in May.

I've never bought off Hayloft before so I can't comment on quality, but I thought this was too good an offer to pass by so I've ordered mine today.

PS..... This is all your fault @longk you've got me hooked on them now :)

You're forgiven, Anthony!!..............actually, I use Hayloft quite often and have found their service and quality more than good enough and, as you say, they do some good offers. I've just taken up their offer regarding the collection of Hellebores and they give you a date by which time they will be posted.:coffee::snorky:

I used Hayloft last year and I have to say their packaging and plants were excellent.

Almost all my seeds are up now and ready to be transplanted.

My " Neon " only managed to give me 1 seed and this has germinated and is growing nicely :(
Will this come true does anyone know ?

The one exception are ( as expected from the advice given, thanks @nibor ) the " Amistad " seeds.
                    Not one has germinated.

Why does a plant produce seed that is infertile ? I can't get my head around it :(

Thank you @Anthony Rogers - I've taken up on this Salvia offer too! My gf's favourite plant is the bushy (and expensive!) hot lips Salvia that was bought for her year before last... last summer when it bloomed it was enormous! So we're both looking forward to the variety of these Salvias when they arrive. :)

                        00000000000000000000000000015810Well they arrived today :)

Excellent plants in perfect packaging. I've never received plants by mail order in such good condition before. Most of them are easily twice the size of any Fuchsias I've had mail order ( except for one company that sends out plants not rooted cuttings. ). And they only cost £1 each :) :) :)
