I had two climbers on a fence which completely died two years ago. One a wisteria and the other, I believe, a member of the jasmin family. From top to bottom the stems were dry and completely dead. Now, late this summer, both have started new growth from the base. Perhaps it pays to be lazy.

Can I mulch around them with grass cuttings?

 Hmmm, I personally don't use fresh grass cuttings for mulching as they can heat up too much & also can be a bit strong... I mulch with my own compost from my compost bin & then bark chips on top around my shrubs & climbers etc Mike..

Beware if you use Verdone or similar on your lawn to kill the weeds - clippings shouldn't then be used for a mulch
