I'm not sure what to do with this rose this year and wonder @wiseowl if you could offer me some advice.

Last year if flowered all year round and the bees loved it.... I'm not sure how to prune it, thank you

Good morning @Apple Blossom my friend it is a bit of a job to see exactly where to prune it.if only it were in 3D;) what Rose is it please ,what age,and what type sorry about all the questions but they are relevant , my own personal opinion is that I would leave it this year and prune it back hard next year, but also you could possibly prune it as below just a tidy up,I only wish I were there:smile:

        :)Thank you @wiseowl ....

Unfortunately I have no idea what it is called or how old:dunno: as it was inherited.... I'm at the vets at the moment so when I get back I shall take a few more photos for you and give it a pruning as suggested :)

Do you have any photos from when it was in flower last year? That may help with any ID :spinning:

In this photo it looks little dry. Has enough water?

Hi both @wiseowl and @"M" yes I do, just need to find them... I've also taken some new photo's ..... Ah just found an old one....:)

This is what the Rose looked like...

              image.jpeg

And here are some new photos of where the buds are..... It's a really prickly little sucker but the bees are so attracted to it ...it's unbelievable .. I've seen 4 bees all at once buzzing around inside one rose!

These new buds are all over it hence I want to cut it down as per advice, thank you Woo but not sure how to do the cut :dunno:

Hi Jonathan... yes it gets plenty as there are other roses that I planted around it and they are doing well... it looked like this when I inherited it and to be honest I hacked it down... thinking it was ugly last year but it did really well under the circumstances, this year I just want to get it right as its a beautiful rose and really attracts the wildlife...:)

Oh just a thought :ideaIPB:.... when the roses open they only last a couple of days as there are lots of new buds opening to replace if that makes sense?

Last year as the roses spent their petals I cut off the forming seed bud so that it encouraged more roses... sorry for the terminology but I'm sure you'll get the jist of what I mean :)

I may well be wrong AB, but, I *think* what you have is a Rosa Rugosa. The flowers are like paper roses and do not last long, but, they do develop into cherry tomato sized rose hips (adored by wildlife).
They are a suckering rose and will pop up where you least expect them.
They are also known as the "Neighbourhood Watch" category of plants - in other words, a burglar deterrent type of shrub ;) (Yeah! Who's going to take *those* on?!!!! :th scifD36: Ouchie! ) along the lines of pyracantha
I'm sure @wiseowl will correct me, if I'm mistaken :)

yep it would certainly keep the burglar out..:lunapic 130165696578242 5: you just would not believe how thorny it is... but it is lovely in full bloom... I haven't waited long enough to see if the seeds turn into tomato size rose hips... and I don't think it is a stray ... I think it is a purpose planted rose... but I may be wrong too:heehee:

Well what ever it is.... I agree..... the wildlife love it and that's why I want to keep it... during the summer months it buzzes with the life of bee's ... hungry for the pollen:)

Burglar proof and wildlife friendly: what more could you ask for? :dunno:
Seriously, for *your* sake, I do hope it is a Rosa Rugosa (both for its beauty/hips/wildlife friendly and burglar proofing).
And, if it is not ...

... burn the blighter! :paladin: :heehee:

That's very interesting BeeHappy.... its like a slaugher... which I did last year and then was grateful that it survived :) however, I must say that last year it was far worse than the first photo I have posted in this thread.... it does look starved of water as @Jonathan Smith stated, but it does do what it does :dunno:
