This has appeared where I'd moved a large shrub, can anyone ID it at this early stage? Not even sure if it is welcome or not ...

I'm sure @longk or @pete will correct me if I'm wrong ... but ... I'm wondering if it might be a triffid? (or a relation of it).

Not the best photos to work from but it might be herbaceous Peony foliage emerging.

Ah, it was buried under a large shrub for years, but now you mention it a peony does seem likely.
However amusing a triffid in my garden might be :yikes:, I'll go for a peony even though it is quite close to other planted perennials now and they like a fair bit of room don't they and don't like to be disturbed
@longk - I thought the pix were quite good perskonally but what kind of photo would you like to be more sure? No David Bailey here though .... apparently ;)

          Thanks
          GG

What was the shrub you moved @Gay Gardener?

Those shoots sort of remind me of Forsythia, which will sometimes produce new shoots from below ground, including from roots that are left behind after the shrub has been dug out.

@Sheal I do hope you are wrong as I've move lots of other plants around it to give it room to do itself justice hoping it was something rather nice (a peony, though not my favourite, would do over a skunk cabbage!).
I'm waiting for the early leaves to unfurl so I can post it to be sure.

I'm glad you said it first, JazzSi :) Going by the furled leaves, that's what I thought too! Then GG said that there used to be a paeony there, so I kept quiet;)
