Don't confuse Calystegia sepium (the common white bindweed) with Convolvus avensis (field bindweed). This is why I try to stick to Latin names.

Small leaves, small pink or white flowers on a smallish vine or large leaves and large white flowers on a massive vine

Ok, I've just found a bit here emerging and your mystery shoot is not Convolvus avensis. The leaves on yours are visually similar in almost everyway except that on C.avensis they are alternate. The leaves on your mystery plant are opposite.

A dilemma! You will need to wait a little longer to see what it really is. My first thought was that it's a clematis because of the opposite and not alternate leaves, as longs says. It looks happy in that sink. I would leave it there for this growing season and move it next winter if you really must.

Thank you Redwing it is in a spot I planted some last year, I know very little about plants but all my other clematis have stayed above ground all winter apart from this if it is one maybe a self seed I don't know,

Yes it does look happy there I will consider leaving it many thanks.

Thanks for that, lonk because at first look I was also convinced it was a variety of bindweed :dbgrtmb:

If it is a late flowering viticella clematis it will die down in winter as they are deciduous. If it is it will give a show of flowers late summer and into autumn.....wait and see.

40! That's a lot! If you are interested in Clematis, have a look at this website:

There is loads of practical info about pruning etc.

Many thanks I will take a look, I am trying to bring colour vertically all round my border/hedge its a space often neglected in most gardens ive seen, it takes no extra room up and you have the added bonus of the wildlife as well as beautiful flowers :).
