    Hello everyone!

A year ago, I moved off the boat I had been living on for many years, and moved into my first house in rural Derbyshire. I have a long, narrow garden, south facing, on loamy, slightly acidic soil. It's very exposed, as it is on its own on the top of a hill. I live with my partner who makes jewellery, and an enormous (but utterly harmless) dog called Max.

I have always loved gardens and gardening, but I was never a good enough driver to have plants on the roof of my boat! There was no chance last year with repairs to the house, but this is the year where I want to really start my garden journey.

I'm excited, but don't want to rush headlong into things. So what I am hoping to do before I spend any money or effort is to talk to you, find out what will work, what won't, and how I'll get started.

I look forward to getting to know you all!

:sign0016: to GC (and terra firma!) its lovely to have you join us :)

I think you are very wise not to rush headlong into things but, I see from your hedging post, that you need to do *something* to make it secure for Max (what breed is he?).

It would be helpful if you could put your location in your profile as it will save you having to repeat "Derbyshire" ad infinitum when you ask a question and members respond with "where abouts are you?" ;) :heehee:

They are a friendly bunch on here and members range from the "just opened a packet of seeds" experience to those who are professional gardeners, so you will get advice aplenty.

Do not panic if any query/post isn't answered immediately because members bob in and out all the time and around the clock so you may go hours and then *boof!* get several answers within a few minutes :heehee:

Looking forward to getting to know you around the forums (and seeing pictures of Max in Pets Corners :doggieshmooze: :wub2: :doggieshmooze: ).

      Thanks!

Max is a Spanish Mastiff. A big, soft thing. I will find photos in a bit.

There is a fence, I will just bodge it with chicken wire until something nicer has grown in front of it. At the minute he has the run of the back yard, which is enough to stretch his legs. And a good run on the Peaks every day.

Welcome to GC Chris. On a hill in an exposed position.....that sounds challenging but hopefully we can give you any help you need. :)
