I have a lilac bush/ tree in my garden which must have been here for several years, planted by the previous owner. It has several thick stems and has grown about 6 foot tall. It appears to be very healthy, plenty of green leaves, but very few flowers. . Would it be a good idea to prune it to say , 4 feet high and also give it some kind of feed ? It is at the bottom of my garden, in front of a leylandii hedge , and planted in the lawn.

I had the same problem. Mine was lanky,in poor soil. Gave it a prune ,fed it,and put garden compost/leaves etc into the bed to improve the organic % of the "dirt".
Mines flowering right now, plenty flowers and wondrfull scent X 2.
So feed, prune and make sure soil is good. All imho.

Is it in the shade of the Leylandii? They do like plenty of sun so that could be part of the problem :)

Thanks for replying. No, luckily the lilac is about 3 feet in front of the leylandii hedge and gets both morning and afternoon sun.

Perhaps the Leylandii are leaching certain nutrients out of the soil? You could try getting some slow release fertiliser and sprinkling around the Lilac to see if that helps (cover with some compost as the fertiliser needs to be covered in order to work properly). It needs to be targeted so the Lilac gets the benefit.
