Pruning Buddleia Davidii - Help

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice regarding pruning my buddleia. I have not cut it back for a while and it is now about 3m high x 2.5/3m wide. The plant was already fairly big when I moved into the house, but it needs seeing to. I understand you can be quite harsh with buddleia davidii, but am I too late to cut it back?

To be honest it is more of a tree now, the trunk is around 75-100mm thick, and it has several more smaller 'trunks'. I quite like it.
It has started to grow new leaves, so I'm assuming, I'll have to wait till next year before I do anything about it.

Its a bit late (February or thereabouts would be better). I don't think it matters that its a tree! its amazing how they sprout from old wood when cut back.

Perhaps cut some selective branches back now, say about 1/3rd, and the rest in the Autumn?

 

I agree with Kristen. You can still prune buddleia but a little more selectively than would normally be the case earlier in the year. Buddleia is virtually indestructible - and I bet there are dozens of little buddleias springing up all over your garden as I type...
