Under greenhouse staging?

Any crops that can do well under staging?

Not really, no. Pity though ...

 

i'm was thinking the same, it seems a shame to leave the space under the staging not planted up, so we are going to try cut and come again leaf salads. The seeds are cheap enough, so its worth ago!

 

The space right next to the glass will be fine I reckon. Cut & Come again is a good idea (although will greenhouse be a bit hot for them?)

 

I am going to try cut and come again right close to the glass and claytonia and land cress further in...worth a go! Any particular varieties you would recommend Kathy?

I'm not very experienced at gardening, but last year (my first year) I grew Jalapeno Chillis in pots under the staging and they were great, had enough chillis to freeze and last us through winter! This year I'll be doing the same

I don't find them very hot - or is that just me? or aren't they supposed to be?

Whereas my Demon Red were fantastic!

 

The light level below staging may be a bit limited now, but in mid summer the light level from the sun will be much higher than plants can utilise. I did a little research when I was making a light box, and found that plants needs about 2,000 lux (measure of light intensity) to grow healthily. A family living room at night may be 50 lux. A well lit office 500 lux. An overcast day 1,000 lux. Full indirect daylight 10,000 - 25,000 lux, and direct sunlight at noon anything up to 100,000 lux. So 2,000 lux is not that demanding during the summer, but the winter is quite another thing. There is a fuller table here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lux

The pupils in our eyes automatically adjust as the light level changes. So we are not fully aware how light levels change in absolute terms.
