How much would you like to sell me any 1 you don't want@Scrungee ?Happy to give you double what you paid for them, so around £3 would seem to give you a good profit:loll:

You have to be in to win with these glitches, and I reckon this one stands little chance of being honoured (but previous HP glitches have), but the VM free stuff glitch I posted resulted in GC members each getting £100's worth of freebies, perhaps because it never got re-posted on bargain websites.

This one was a larf, but you had to be at their store at opening time to make off with your haul before the managers got emails from head office http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/...crewfix-sells-34-99-price-glitch-website.html

@silu - I used to be in the industry, so although I am a little rusty I still try and keep my skills up to date. I am at work at the moment, and will be until approx 8pm tonight, but I promise I will come back to you regarding TV's later on. The Amazon Fire Stick is a great wee bit of kit - we have two of them; again, I will go into more detail later.

Oh you made me laugh @fat controller, as husband also used to be in the computer industry back in the day. He sold Golfball type writers, word processors and latterly things that attached to IBM mainframe computers. In those days it would appear the important thing was to be a good salesman and you didn't need any real knowledge of what you were selling! He was pretty successful BUT he knows maybe less, certainly not more about computers today than I do which is not a lot! Perhaps it just shows how fast the industry has moved ove the last 30 odd years and that lots of the public (not me) are now knowledgeable about computers and understand the language whereas before customers could be "blinded by science" and jargon.
Luckily for me there are folk like you who are happy to help an ageing old foggie like me who sees the benefits of what computers can do to assist my life but am clueless as to how they do it:)

@silu , I am looking for a new desktop PC this autumn . Had a Dell for about 10 years running XP without a glitch . But as XP etc no longer are supported , and Chrome will not let me update it , the time has come to move on . I find Ebuyer has some very attractive prices for desktops . Never been a laptop person, but presume they are priced to sell

I was more in the TV/Video/Hi-Fi side of things, although that naturally evolved into computers too. I left the trade almost twenty years ago now, and things have moved on a phenomenal amount since then. Over the past five or so years, I have made a more conscious effort to get my knowledge a bit more up to date in terms of hardware repairs, and have invested in some of the more specialised tools that are required nowadays. I don't charge any more, but will repair/service stuff for the cost of the parts on the basis that it is doing someone a good turn; a lot of products do not lend themselves to repair nowadays, so often repairs have to be more imaginative, so it would be hard to offer any sort of proper guarantee anyway - however, somewhat ironically the repairs seem to last longer than the original parts that failed did.

It is a shame that you aren't closer, as almost certainly the problem with your TV is simply bad solder joints (VERY common nowadays since the move to lead-free solder).

There is so little margin on electronics nowadays, that it is highly unlikely that you would get any more of a deal by buying a laptop and a TV at the same time - the good news is that prices for decent TV's are really keen anyway. The nearest common size for you would be 32" - the likes of this or this would be ideal. Neither of those would pose me any concerns at all - there is also a Panasonic for £270 which would be equally as good.

AO are spot on too - I got my dishwasher from them, and their service is great.

They did not have lead-free solder in the 50's :-) Silu said her tvs were older than her :-)

NO I did NOT say my tvs are older than me @Jack McHammocklashing you cheeky so and so:). They are all colour tvs and I think I am right in saying that colour tvs didn't become widely available to jo public in the late 50s/early 60s? . I was born a wee bit earlier than that...but not a lot!
Thank you very much @fat controller re the tvs. I will put my mind to the recommendations over the next few days and can see the credit card is in for a bit of a bashing with both a laptop and tv being bought. It must be a good while since I bought anything electrical of any great expense so count myself lucky that previous purchases have lasted...oh no doubt my great but ancient washing machine will go phut tomorrow:rolleyespink:, famous last words and all that.
Re the laptop, do I need to purchase any extra security stuff? I do bank on line but apart from that I really don't mind who knows what I do on line as have no skeletons in the cupboards or anything of much of interest to anybody else.

I was really referring to the date when lead was removed from solder, Which was a lot later than your TV's :-) and that was a compliment colour TV became available to the Public late 60's In pubs 67 and Public (affordable 70 for the affluent or for sailors wives when hubby was going on a three year stint )
You really must have security, many are free AVG is good, a purchased one is better, My experience is AVG suffices though I pay for Norton, many new laptops come with Mcafee installed anyway

If you bank on line then you should use the programme provided free from your bank "Trusteer report" with RBS or similar

I agree with Jack about security.

Trusteer should be provided by your bank's website. If not, then you can go to the Trusteer site and then click on the bank that you use. Then you can follow instructions.

A virus checker and firewall are a must but I think that if you are having a MS based computer they have a free anti-virus software - I think it's now called Windows Defender but on older operating systems was Microsoft Security Essentials. Both have good reports from Which?. Other, non-Microsoft software is available and AVG and Avast have good ratings.

I can't help you with modern type computer thingies but can help if you need to know about an Abacus or Soroban :dbgrtmb: :snork:

I was sort of pulling your leg @Jack McHammocklashing! Many thanks for the information both you and @shiney. I will check what the new laptop has installed already and do a bit of homework to see if I need more. I know it's important to have some security systems in place but at the same time I'm not doing work for MI6 so don't need the kitchen sink as well. Husband knowing diddly squat about the subject got everything security system known to man put on his only to be told by a friend of his that most were doing a duplicate job and loads of none spam emails ended up in his trash box! Maybe it is becoming clear why I asked you good knowledgeable souls about another machine for me rather than relying on someone who will remain nameless:)

Just a simple virus checker and firewall, set to update regularly should suffice, but Trusteer should be used as it gives some cover with your bank (some banks won't allow internet banking without it).

See HP's blip hit the headlines but you aren't getting the laptops for the price you bought them for evidently. Good try @Scrungee , if HP had honoured the sales that would have been your Best Buy ever, I'd expect.

Yes, I saw that at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36941960

"We can confirm that due to a processing error, select products were wrongly priced on our UK website over the weekend," HP said.

"This has now been corrected with related orders cancelled."

But they've just sent me an email in the last couple of hours informing me my order has been accepted.

            hp4.png

P.S. Just realized I ordered 2 of the £3,200 laptops (for £2.64 each), so 5 ordered in total, but site was going a bit crazy and I just kept hitting add to basket buttons. Looking at some of the cheaper ones I ordered, now regret not going for the extra 8gb of RAM as it was only an extra 37p.

P.P.S. I know this will still probably be cancelled, but occasionally some mis-priced orders get through (the Screwfix one was fun). As somebody else said, you've less chance winning the lottery than actually getting delivery of a mis-priced order, but does that stop you from buying lottery tickets?

            EDIT:
Got the cancellation email, but somebody's slipped through the net and was delivered about an hour ago, maybe some more got through and are out for delivery, but they're keeping quiet and don't want to draw attention and get the delivery cancelled.
