I will be travelling south sometime next week by train. Can anyone tell me please if a return ticket is open ended, in other words can I travel back on any day I choose. Also, does it expire after a certain period of time.

I work with a couple of guys who are walking encyclopedias when it comes to trains (and no, I am not kidding!); I will ask them tomorrow for you and let you know when I get home. They will also know what the cheapest options are.

Are you looking for any particular class of travel, or any special features (restaurant car/buffet car)?

It's a long time since I've used a train. But when I used to all the time, it depended on the type of ticket you chose. I used to get off peak standard return. It meant I could catch any train each way over the weekend, provided it was outside of main commuting times. But you could also get tickets for specific trains at specific times. They were a bit cheaper, but it meant if you missed your train, you could no just get the next one, you'd have to pay again.

Thanks FC, no special travel needed as long as I'm not in a cattle truck! :)

I think I should explain Clueless, I'll be travelling from Liverpool/Lime Street to London/Euston. A different sort of ticket I think.

I'll ask the boys in the morning and get back to you. Drop me an email if you can @Sheal - that will remind me, and make sure that I can reply to you from work tomorrow. :)

If you have even a rough idea of when you would like to travel, stick that in the email too?

Ive only recently useda train (strange i know) but i buy an open return ticket thats valid for 30 days and can only be used outside rush hour. Its only a couple of quid more than a single so it suits me.

              Hi Sheal,

If your train is going to stop at Birmingham New Street it may be cheaper to split your ticket. ( That is to buy single from Liverpool to Birmingham and single from Birmingham to London and the same for the return journey ) you can buy tickets for the same train so you don't even have to change seats let alone trains.

I do this when going to Devon and got £60 tickets for £11.50..

Thanks Anthony but I don't understand how single tickets are cheaper than returns?

I'm not even going to pretend to understand it Sheal. Our rail network is totally incomprehensible. For instance our local trains are Kidderminster to Birmingham ....... £6.60 return ( 40 miles ). Kidderminster to Worcester ....... £7.20 return ( 28 miles ). The Birmingham actually works out even cheaper if I buy tickets splitting the journey at Stourbridge.

Edit........ A lot has to do with which company you travel with. Around here we have Virgin Trains ( expensive ) and Chiltern Railways ( cheap ).

Hmmm, could it also be that some trains/lines carry more passengers so they charge more for bigger profit?

hi - from Liverpool street to Euston you can catch the underground (I wouldnt know about other railways) for which ideally you should have an oyster card (costs £5 from a newsagent).
