Not what they were expecting when they went on holiday

Respect the sea good people. If its rough, keep your distance.

Don't swim if it's silly weather.

If you're going for a walk on the coast, let someone know when you'll be expected back.

Check the tide times and plan your route accordingly.

I can't be there to save everyone and neither can the emergency services.

If in doubt, call 999 and ask for coastguards.

They'd rather have a call out during the day than a missing persons report at 3am.

I'd add, don't swim even if it looks flat calm, unless you know the local conditions very well, and there are plenty of people around should you need help. It is not unusual to find powerful currents just below the surface that show no sign at the surface.

And one especially for the kids. Don't go climbing on the boulders at the foot of cliffs. I saw that today just down the coast. Some kids climbing over the last big rock fall. Quite apart from the risk of accident involving falling from said boulders, it's hard to understand how the risk of rocks landing on ones head can be overlooked. If your climbing on boulders that are the same colour as the rock face towering a couple of hundred foot straight over you, to me it should be obvious that there is a risk of being crushed.

Apart from what's already been said, you all know I'm a massive fan of the emergency services, DO NOT be so selfish to climb on boulders, rocks, cliff edges or swim when the tide is going out, you put yourself at risk & also put the coastguards lives at risk! Yes they are there to do a job but their lives are precious too, I'm sure if people used their common sense there would be far less emergencies & money wasted on unnecessary call outs! (Oh dear grumpy sensible old woman on here again!!!:heehee:)

Whilst I feel sorry for the families of those who have perished, given how the weather was on Saturday, I cannot believe that people were so stupid as to venture into the sea or onto the rocks - hell, the sea swell was being talked about on all the weather forecasts on Friday into Saturday.

The sad but undeniable truth is that people in general are often more stupid than they give themselves credit for. This is not really their fault. You either have common sense or you don't.

Some people think water is soft. How can it possibly be dangerous. They can swim two lengths in a swimming pool. Therefore they can swim anywhere.

They completely fail to realise that water shapes the world around us. If it is powerful enough to cut a valley through solid granite, or smash away solid rock to make a 300 ft cliff face, it doesn't take too much common sense to work out what chance a few stone of weak human flesh has got of opposing it. The RNLI and Coastguard have very powerful boats and highly trained crews equipped with crash helmets and sturdy protective gear. Yet sadly some people never wonder why they need such kit and training, figuring it's perfectly safe because it's only water after all.

A young woman holidaying in Cornwall was rescued by the same lifeboat crew three times in four days after being cut off by the tide.

She was saved by the RNLI on Tuesday, Thursday and again on Friday.

In each case, she had been cut off by the tide while out walking and the D-class inshore lifeboat crews had to go into the water to rescue her.

She has since been given a "comprehensive safety briefing", the RNLI said.

It said sea and weather conditions last week meant none of the rescues had been particularly easy.

After two rescues , nature should have been allowed to take its course .........

Hollywood always portrays drowning as a noisy affair. It certainly is not. No one hears you screaming when your head is underwater

Sometimes the sea gives up its dead sometimes Not
My father in law was the Harbour master in Hong Kong when Typhoon Wanda struck in 1962
he was lost with three hands trying to save a tanker, two were saved
                          Then the problems begin
Without a body you have to wait seven years to be declared dead, in the mean time widow and kids lose their home, have to make their own way back to the UK and accommodation, and live with no income other than what the widow can earn (district nurse) three children
Being a MAN he had all the documentation On board in his cabin, so no Father no Passports, no Insurance Docs
It was Hell, Just a few photographs of the good times Christmas parties in the Hong Kong club

I have served many years at sea, It is cruel, suffered a few Typhoons, when a warships solid 6" steel deck was peeled back like a banana, yes the sea is cruel, and only fools or total lack of knowledge would play with it, Though we all want to
Stand on a pier with waves coming over and getting soaked oh such fun, well it is not

You don't even try to scream or struggle when drowning. You just sort of go all limp and floppy.

There's a video about it somewhere. I'll see if I can find it later.

The RNLI is one of the charities we support as the risks they take trying to save others makes them all heros in my eyes along with the Mountain Rescue people:yes:

RIP to all those people who have lost their lives in these tragedies and we must all treat the sea with respect at all times:sad:
