    @pete @daitheplant

Although I agree that a temperature of 112F in the shade with a thermometer properly sited is not possible, it can still happen on the shady side of a shed if the shed heats up a lot during the day. Uninsulated sheds can easily reach that temperature inside and the heat gets transmitted through the single panel walls.

We have our weather sensor for our weather station fixed to the wall of our summerhouse. It's never in the sun as it is under the big, open, porch and the walls are extremely well insulated. So I think that ours doesn't get affected by the transmission of heat but it does get affected by the area of the garden it's in. On hot days that area (we call it the main garden) definitely gets hotter than the rest of the garden because of it being sheltered from the wind.

This was the temperature last week

The temperature down by the veggie plot, with the wind blowing across from the field was 92F.

So the positioning of the thermometer is important. however, on an allotment, I don't think you have much choice.

Siting a thermometer is always a problem if you dont have all the correct gadgets available.

My way around it is to use a north facing concrete wall, for my thermometers, I then have a sensor, a max/ min and a pretty accurate mercury one that is spaced in half degrees celsius.

I probably don't get a totally accurate result that way, but I think its pretty close.

Only time I doubt mine is on really cold nights, it usually reads a bit high, as its only 20ft from the house.
On an allotment I'd look for a shady spot under bushes or trees with a good air flow.
As basically its the air temperature that we really want, not the heat of the sun or reflected heat from buildings.:)

Having said all that, I had 25C today, with mostly sunny conditions.

00000000000000000000000000001348Pete, the thermometer showed a temp of 112.3f. I wish I`d taken a pic, now. Today we have had drizzle, cold, sunshine, heat then back to cloudy and chilly.

I dont doubt that fact for one minute Dai.
I just think the siting of the thermometer is wrong.
You're not getting a true, or near true air temp from it, the shed is hotting up and distorting the reading.

Its very easy to get a higher reading than a lower one on sunny days, the lowest one you get is more likely to be nearer the truth.

Ever seen that bloke from the BBC that wanders out, most years, onto centre court at Wimbledon, throws a thermometer on the ground and makes the bold statement, "Its 110F today out there".

It's global warming - caused by all those people with smart phones :ideaIPB:
It's the non-stop movement of their thumbs that's generating the heat. :hate-shocked: It's frying their brains and causing them to walk into lampposts

The sun is sulking a little bit today. It's trying to hide but not doing a very good job of it.
