    Subject: Fw: Eye of God
This is a picture taken by NASA with the Hubble telescope. They are referring to it as the "Eye of God". I thought it was beautiful and worth sharing.

With ALL respect, who if anybody can prove it is God? I go to church, yet still not found solid Evidence as to exactly what God looked like, in order to prove these claims.

It's human nature to seek out patterns emerging in random things, I think it's wonderful of people to see these things with their imagination.

    That hand is amazing.

I'm going to get slightly nerdy now because I studied human visual perception as part of my course at uni. We see familiar things in random stuff because our vision is not actually anywhere near as good as we think it is. The part of the brain that is responsible for vision (the visual cortex) makes a lot of stuff up to compensate for the fact that our eyes have a significant blind spot right in the centre of our field of vision. Also we see movement before we see any detail, and we don't see colour detail until last. While we think our vision is such that we get the full picture more or less instantly, our brain actually builds it up in steps and drags in familiar stuff from our memory to aid in the construction of the image, especially ones that relate to what we were expecting to see (one of the possible reasons people see ghosts when in fact they see something else entirely while in the right frame of mind to see a ghost). Special effects artists and illusionists know all about the limitations of our vision and how to take advantage of those limitations as a matter of course in order to trick our minds into thinking we are seeing more than we actually are.

There you go, we can all sleep better at night now we know that:)

Not if you're a kid who, when you go to bed at night, sees monsters faces in crumpled bedding, or eyes looking at you in the airtexed ceiling lol-actually I can laugh at it now it wasn't very funny when I was that 7yr old.

I know what you mean. That's a good example of what I was on about. Your visual cortex was trying to interpret what you were seeing, based on input from your eyes, as well as memories of stuff you've seen on TV or in picture books, added to that an apprehensive state of mind that was causing you to expect to see scary stuff.

Incidentally, you don't need to be a 7yr old kid to test out the weirdness of our vuisual perception. There are loads of optical illusions you can find on t'internet to demonstrate it, and visual tests. The best technical test I say involves a red dot moving about on an otherwise blank screen. It randomly changes from red to green and you have to indicate when you notice the colour change. For most people, several seconds pass before they notice its changed colour. In the next stage of the test the dot is stationary, and most people spot the colour change more or less immediately. A diy test you can try is to stare at a fixed object without blinking or moving your eyes. After a good few seconds, the object will appear to vanish. Isaac Newton had a particulary gross test, where he squashed his own eyes while looking at stuff and observed how it messed up his vision:)
