Building onto Jiffy's idea, what about a fairly cheap USB infrared camera setup, which infrared lamp, connected to a pc running some motion detection recording software. years ago I tried icatcher sentry. it was free. I don't know if it still is.

The problem using CCTV for us is that we would have to keep taking it off of the house wall every time we went away because when we stay on the caravan sites and it gets dark, even though there are bollards to give out some light it would be nice to be able to see any wildlife that visits the site, like the other week when we were away we are sure we had a Tawny Owl fly past the front of the caravan as he was screeching but couldn't see it as it was pitch black:snorky:

We keep saying we are going to get CCTV installed but friends of ours have it all round their house and garage but the alarms keep going off as it is that sensitive it keeps getting set off and the neighbours are not too pleased sot hey keep having to have the installers back out to fix it:snorky:

Mr Kandy Googled them and he was saying the prices of the night vision Mono/binoculars can vary in price from a few hundred pounds to thousands, but that is no different to other stuff sold in the shops/net.The thing is you can go for cheap ones and they turn out rubbish so might be better off paying a bit more money if you can afford it and will get plenty of use out of them:smile:

Hi and thanks for your replys x ,Ive already got cctv which is fab if your not watching TV or have time to run through footage which a lot of the time we just really dont with working full time, also i thought maybe the binoculars may prise him off the couch in winter!:heehee:
Ive tried to review them but i have no idea what im looking for :dunno:
I was hoping to spend about £200 as it only for a shorter range..no idea if that would make a difference on a purchase price or compromise on lense ?? :dunno:
Or is it heat seek that im looking for ? or is that built in with night vision ? This is one hard xmas pressie i need to buy :hate-shocked:x

That's the fab thing about that icatcher software I mentioned. You don't have to sit through hours of nothing. It uses clever motion detection and only records when something moves.

I will have to check if mine has that option,Thanks @clueless1
Ive been watching a few videos this morning on the difference between night vision and thermal as im not sure which i wanted to purchase,i doubt i can afford thermal imaging at short notice so i will stick to night vision for now, plus thermal doesnt film through glass :)

My understanding is that thermal vision is passive infrared. ie it films the infrared that is emitted by whatever you're filming. It has to be extremely sensitive and have super filtering of other bandwidths to exclude 'noise' from visible light.

What we know as night vision is just monochrome but in the visible bandwidth. Like thermal, it has to be insanely sensitive and due to the high sensitivity, needs strong filters to block out light that would saturate the optical sensor (CCD).

Then there's what we would just call infrared. This is again just a monochrome camera, but doesn't need to be super sensitive or have super strong filters. Therefore it can be much cheaper. It works in pitch black simply because it has a lamp to illuminate the area. The only difference being that the lamp is infrared, and therefore largely invisible to the naked eye of most things.

Note I said most. This is potentially one of the shortcomings of infrared. Some things, even some people, can to varying degrees see infrared, so theoretically it's not totally covert. As an aside, when I was 16, in my first job, I had to go into a very untidy store room (literally had to climb over junk). There were no windows, and no light whatsoever except the actual ceiling light. The ceiling light was on a timer to save energy. I was asking far in as you could get when the timer ran out. It was absolute darkness. I shouted but nobody could hear me. I was stuck. After a few minutes, the strangest thing happened. In my peripheral vision, I could see a straight line that went along, then bent 90 degrees upwards. It was only very faint. At first I thought it was my eyes doing crazy things in the dark, but I realised that as I moved my eyes about, this faint coloured line didn't move with me. I realised I could actually see the heat from the uninsulated central heating pipes. I used it to navigate out of the pitch black cluttered store room.
