Santa brought us an xbox one. Early experimentation shows it to be a potentially excellent thing. But it's all new to me. Considering my professional as a computer programmer I'm not that clued up on the latest gadgetry.

Anyone know anything useful to get the most out of it?

It came with a two week free trial of xbox gold, whatever that's all about. I put the key in and it said it was activated but I can't see anything obvious that's changed.

      From my sons:

Xbox Gold: the activation key is, very basically, internet access. It means that any games you have for the Xbox, you can now play against others online. Think it also gives you access to downloadable, internet only, extras for your games (but, that may, or may not, cost you extra).

To get the most out of it (please forgive my sons their rudeness): "Play games on it!" :rolleyespink:

PS: Oh and ... how very nice your Santa was :dbgrtmb:

Also, with the Xbox Gold, seems you get a certain level of streaming services too

Still figuring it out, but so far it's very good. And addictive. But there's a strange unexpected twist which is really nice. I was worried it might make CL1.1 become lazy and ignorant. The opposite is true. We've been working together to figure it all out, both in terms of the console itself and some of the games. We bought several new games for it today.

Apart from games, we found bbc iplayer and hot that going. Tomorrow we're going to see if it plays movie dvds. It better do because I took the dvd player out to make way for it.

I 'think' you can play 4k discs on it, but not sure.

Ah, it might only do that on the One S.

Ours is apparently a one s. Not sure what a 4k disc is though. Back in the olden days when my career in computing was just beginning, we had 360k floppy discs. They were square.

One S is a great machine I'm told. A 4k disc is the next incarnation of movie formats (up from blu ray) but you need a compatible TV. Pictures are stupendously sharp but availability is currently quite low

I think Netflix do some 4k content, but I usually scan youtube for some stuff. As Loofah said...an amazingly sharp picture.

I very much doubt it would be any good to us. Our telly is quite old. It's HD but the built in freeview isn't, so I doubt it's going to do anything better than 1080p.
