My contactless card hardly ever works even if I run it past the reader loads of times.

Thanks for the warning though. I'll ask my bank if they can disable it.

Thats when the reader debits the next nearest card to yours :yikes: Not coming shopping with you anymore Dave

There was a bloke I used to work with that pee'd me off proper once. I bided my time for revenge, then contactlessly wiped his cards by swiping a supermagnet over his back pocket the day we broke up for xmas :snorky:

He couldn't get any money out till the banks re opened :heehee:

Never seen a "card defender", I assume it's a lead lined box? :snork:

Things really are getting stupid these days the more technology moves on the more problems it creates.
I dont really understand this contactless idea anyway.
How many seconds does it take to stick your card in and put in four numbers.
Most of the time is taken up by the useless card reader sorting itself out and asking for the pin.

Sort out the card readers, speed up their reading of the card and contactless would be a thing of the past.

Have got rid of my contactless card.

            A) it takes too long to come out of the bank, 5-7 days for some things!
            b) I lose my cards a lot!

Contactless never appealed to me in the first instance! Mind you, even supermarket transactions are becoming more and more "contactless" too with self service, scan as you go ...

... now, if the NHS could harness such technology, you could arrive at the door, step on the conveyor belt, swipe your "personal details" (ID card) and select your symptoms. Then, the conveyor belt could stop you off at the right machine (x-ray, MIR scanner etc), a quick flip and there you'd be, on your back having your insides read, then a quick flip off that bed and your back on the conveyor belt ... meanwhile, another computer reads your x-ray/scan and by the time the conveyor belt had flipped you out at the café for a quick flick of the coffee machine and a microwaved burger, the diagnosis is made. Back on the conveyor belt for either pharmacy, surgery, bed rest or booted out for malingering  Save a small fortune a contactless NHS

Walmart has check your own registers. I never use them. If I have to check my own purchases, why don't I get a discount for saving them the labor costs? Besides, I see it as costing somebody a job, so I will stand in line to check out with a live person at the register.

also family members using them with out the card horder permission

also key fobs, make sure you have locked your car as there is some people out there with blockers that stops the car from locking then someone come a steals things from inside, but your insurance won't pay out because you haven't lock your car, so don't pess the button when you are 10-20 feet away you may not have locked it do it by your car

Let's hope that crazy nut in government that's in charge of the NHS isn't reading this.

Macdonalds will have to close down because all their staff will leave to become medical technicians, and all the real medics will have to go on the dole.

Still, it could put a swift end to the population boom.

Most banks can't disable them once they have been enabled - and most newer ones are enabled automatically.

With some banks you can ask them for cards that are not enabled but you may have to change your password.

If you don't want to change your password then you will need to ask for a replacement card but the only way (with some of the banks) to avoid the card being enabled is to never use it in a cash machine (doesn't get activated until it has been in a machine). You just use it for purchases.

Some banks are helpful and others are not.

A 'card defender' is like a small, flat wallet which has wires running through it. So whilst the card is in the defender it can't be read. So it makes it safe to walk around with it. :dbgrtmb:

If you have an enabled card and you don't want it to take the money automatically you can try to avoid it by placing one hand over the face of the machine and carefully inserting the card into the slot from below.

They are definitely not very safe but the banks say they only pay out small amounts (£20-£30 depending on the type of purchase) and that they will pay you back if the money is taken fraudulently. This is fine if you have plenty of money in the account. It doesn't take into account that, if the fraudsters have scanned your card, your account can be cleared out by multiple transactions at different places. That would make you in danger of being overdrawn or not being able to buy anything.

Also, I would never trust a 'hole in the wall' machine. If you need cash then either get cashback at a supermarket or at a bank or post office. :paladin:

I've used hole in the wall machines for years and never had a problem.
I've only used contactless when some foreign bloke behind the counter at a filling station decided to take my card from me and do it for me.
I was very wary of that transaction, but it turned out ok.

Why? Because it was a filling station? Because it was a bloke?

I find contactless very useful , when paying for a small basket of items at the local shop , or a round of drinks at the pub if I am a bit short of the folding stuff. The limit on a contactless transaction is £30. But if someone lifted my card how many £30 could they spend ?

No because he grabbed my card when I was trying to put it in the slot, gabbling something or other, then he waved it over the machine not once but twice .

Couldn't understand a word he said, so that didn't help the situation.

As I left the building he followed me with a piece of paper, tearing it up and he went round the back of the building?????

By that time I was getting in my car.
