Interesting!... a simple question.... should I need to roll clay soil?... seems to end up in an arguement of whether or not I should leave my job!

It does seem a tad extreme.

I would say this though. Why buy and dog then bark yourself?

You are the professional, if I had easked you to come and sort out my garden I would do you the honour and respect of appreciating that you as a professional know better than me.

You know what needs to be done, tell her this and then get on with it.

True, but if you owned an estate you'd have a plum stuck in your mouth and you'd no longer be able to think normally!!

Quercus, you need to ask them if they want it done THEIR way or the RIGHT way, then you decide which option you want.:thumb: YOUR way is the right way, you know that.

Quercus. You clearly have two seperate problems. A small gardening one and a large workplace one.

The gardening problem is clear, as others have pointed out. Rolling is not a good option. You do need a flat surface but a fork or a rake will do that. The workplace problem is that you work for an idiot, ie someone with preformed ideas who has no intention of changing them irrespective of the facts. They are not interested in information or advice.

Your problem is - do you want to work for someone like this? Is your integrity or your job (ie the money) more important. Sadly, for most of us, the need for security of income is the more important, in which case you have to swallow your pride and do what you are told. An e-mail from the RHS "proving" that you shouldn't use a roller, will not please them any more then an e-mail from Mahomet "proving" that he made it all up about Allah's existance, will turn suicide bombers into respectable citizens. It might even make them madder. :D

When the crops fail and the sh*t hits the fan, just take a leaf out of our Prime Minister's book on the economic crisis, and say you never saw it coming. You are much more likely to keep your job if you lie through your teeth than if you tell the truth. Sorry! - but that's life.

    Hi Quercus,

I would definitley not roll the clay. Get some lime into it,( but not if you are going to grow lime hating ericaceous plants obviously,)but for most garden veggies this will be OK except potatoes which will get scabby. The l ime should help to break up the clay and sweeten the soil and improve the drainage. You should be glad you have clay as it really is the best type of soil to have! The colloidal structure of clay means it holds plant foods better than any other. If you can cultivate it you will have the best. Best of luck.
