Sue's garden

Heya,

This afternoon I was sent home sick from work - the reception desk I sit on is on a corridor with a glass roof, so it was like being in a greenhouse and really hot, and I'm no good in the heat like that so I don't know how I'll manage in the height of summer...

Anyway, when I was at home, after calling my mum, I felt a bit better so thought I'd do a few little jobs out in the garden - was out there for over 2 hours before I started feeling a bit hungry again.

When I was in Brum the other week, I brought 3 small cactus's from a local car boot, along with a small pot thing for them, so I planted them up (they are going on the kitchen window):



I then split up a pot plant I had, as mum said it needed splitting, and I got 10 smaller plants out of it:



The other evening I found a pot of Sweet Pea's I'd brought from Morrison's weeks ago, which desparately needed splitting, and I got 14 plants out of that one small plant:





The above 2 planters are just a temporary measure until I get my raised bed, but as I was splitting them up I found they had all wound themselves around each other so I had to carefully free them all

The other week I sowed some grass seed into 3 small black trays, so I can quickly fill any bare patches in the lawn I'll get when I get round to weeding the lawn, and I checked on them this morning, and they are all beginning to sprout up a bit, which I was happy to see :yho:

Think thats everything for now, I hope to get out there again tomorrow at some point, of only for a quick few minutes before leaving for work :thumb:

Well done Jen your gardens coming along well and the york stone looks great. No need for u to go to the gym with them to lift lol

 

Wow - thats a huge amount of stone!! I am a typical weedy girl im afraid and struggle like hell lifting a few pebbles let alone those so well done you !!!

Nice little statue too - they have some great things at supermarkets dont they ? Went to Morrisons the last few weeks and picked up a few cute little bits. Our Asda doesnt open for a few more weeks though ! I always think if you purchase something when doing the shopping it doesnt count as 'more money on the garden' cause its in with the food lol

Lets hope we all have some decent weather this bank holiday weekend to get stuck in and get all the jobs done eh

 

Jen, your gardening is coming on so well and those stones are gorgeous! Are the stones for the raised bed that you mentioned?

I don't really know what I'm going to do with the rocks yet, there are so many, and I unloaded the lot I collected on Friday last night (and I found wearing flip flops while using a wheelbarrow doesn't really work - the rocks tipped themselves onto my compost heap... :hehe: :lollol and we're going round today in Paul's car to collect the last of the rocks later.

I want some in the raised bed dad is making me (the bed itself is being made out of wood - 6"x1" stuff) but I'm not sure about the rest, I might be creative and make a feature or something, I don't know yet... :hehe:

Hoping to get out in the garden and get a bit of work done today, as the sun is shining for once on a bank holiday and i have no car boot sales locally to visit... :(

Heya,

I got a little work done yesterday - I planted my tricycle and a tub from Nan's house up with some purpley flowers (will post pics later) and Dan & Cat helped me to put the sunflowers I got from work into proper plant pots as the degradeable ones were getting weaker.

This morning the wind had got a few of my plants - a pot with some lillies in had toppled off the patio, so had the pot with my forget me nots in (lucky it wasn't damaged) and a few others had been blown over, so I put them all in safe places before leaving for work.

I'm having a bit of car trouble at the moment, Polly (my car) wouldn't start this morning so had to get the breakdown guy out who got her started and I took her to the garage who couldn't find anything wrong with her and when I got her back she was so slow (she has been slow since about Christmas, but only when she's cold), but this evening she just didn't have much power, so I don't think she'll start again in the morning, but we shall see...

Sorry I've not been around lately, been busy for the last few days. I will upload the photo's on my phone later on and post them on here

Polly is still in with the garage. Tuesday, the day she wouldn't start, I got her back from the garage (they didn't charge me anything as they couldn't find what was wrong with her) but she still wasn't right - when you put your foot on the gas there just wasn't any power at all. Tilly had to be at the vets for 5.40pm, I drove so I could show Paul the problems I was having. We got to the vets and back, somehow but I didn't think she would start on Wednesday morning. She did, but I had to wait 5-10 minutes for her to warm up before driving her. I called the garage as she really wasn't right so I dropped her back at the garage on my way home that day - they've had her there since.

They've done loads of tests and its the sensor on the throttle body (we know this as when the sensor was plugged in and you put your foot on the gas, there wasn't any power, and when it was unplugged and the gas was pressed, she was fine). A new one would cost me apparently £300, so they've said its better if I track down a second hand one, that should fix the problem. Paul has looked on eBay and a guy sells new ones for £95 so we're going to contact him to ask if it'll fit and work in Pol, so if it does, we'll get one and get it sent onto the garage, where they'll fit it for me. So, really, all I reckon I'll be paying for is the labour to fit the new throttle body.

We're in Birmingham this weekend so I won't get Pol back til middle of next week sometime - being without my car is like not having an arm or something, its awful having to rely on other people taking me to work and back home again :(

Heya,

Brought a load of plants home from Birmingham on Sunday, including the rest of my seedlings which I need to split up this week, so by the time I'd unpacked everything from the car into the back garden and topped the water up in the tubs and watered my new plants, it was getting late.

I watered my seedlings this morning before leaving for work, using my grandad's watering can, and when I got back home I watered everything again as it had all gone really dry again. We had to nip out somewhere this evening, so when we got back I got my new hosepipe out and watered everything including the lawn and Paul!!!

The sunflowers don't seem to be doing much, but here they are shortly after being re-potted:



Here's the tricycle and a tub from Nan's house planted up (they have perked up a lot since, think they sulked a bit after being moved)





These are the Stocks I forgot I brought from Morrisons - the one with the small flower has opened up a little more since and some of the leaves have gone yellow - is it right to pull the yellow leaves off?

And we've had to put a small fence thing up around the compost heap as Tilly was pinching the teabags and eating them, and so far, it seems to be working



On Friday before leaving one of my lillies had opened up:



5-6 more have since opened up, so will post photo's of them later

Hi Jen, your garden is coming along nicely
I had to smile at Tilly eating the teabags! I can't think of anything less appetising :hehe:

I bought the same stock from Morrisons [99p?] and I put mine in a pot and they have picked up nicely now. In fact I wish I had bought a few more.

Lillies are pretty, especially the pink ones.

Sorry for not replying for a while, but I've not done too much in the garden this week

I got my car back, but she's developed another problem now - she judders when going about 55-70mph and she slows herself down. I'm down in Brum now, took me ages to get there last night as I had to trundle along the M6 at about 59mph and she was fine, today she judders at about 54pmh+ so I'm not looking forward to the journey home tomorrow :(

Anyway, back to the garden... some more lilies have opened up with a few more due to open this weekend (including the first white ones :yho





And, I had a nice surprise during the week aswell...

A month or so ago, the Heavenly Blue (Lithodora) plant I brought from Wilkinson's started to die off, so I thought I was going to loose it (I only brought it as it had some lovely delicate blue flowers on) so I thought I'd have a go at rescuing it:

Before I started:



We thought the soil/compost it was in wasn't suitable for the plant so after I took it out the original pot, I got as much soil off it as I could (which wasn't much as the roots were really tight) and I put it in a bigger pot with some gravel, as apparently the roots like to be kept cool)



It didn't seem to do much for a while until on Wednesday when this appeared:

It has a good few more flower buds on it now, which I was so happy to see :D

Will post again when I return to Liverpool with an update on how everything is getting on I'm taking the first part of my raised bed with me tomorrow so we can make a start on levelling off the ground and we can start filling it, so I'll be able to plant some of my flowers soon :D

This is a truly fascinating thread,even for me a long time gardener,I look forward to reading your posts because of the enthusiastic way you go about gardening ...that plant you rescued looks as if it had become pot bound and used up any food available in its compost ...you did the right thing because you can see the way it has responded :thmb: be careful on the trip home, it seems to me as if you might need your wheels balancing,it doesnt take long to do and usually they will do it while you wait ...the symptoms you describe fit that siuation although of course it might be something else,you need to get it checked out as soon as possible .....keep up the good work in the garden,because as I say its a fascinating story
