Soup will achieve the same result. Looking at the contents of cartons of soup in our fridge they appear to be around 50% water, and our favourite NCG Skinny Tomato (with Lentils) contains the most protein.

Best thing about then is that they've all been free (my favourite price), just go to What We're Up To | New Covent Garden Soup and click on any 'Find out more' (doesn't matter which one, they all take you to the same link and the vouchers aren't product specific), order one voucher per email (I've got hundreds of addresses), print some out, keeping some 'banked' as they'll have an expiry date 28 days from printing, and take them to somewhere they're on offer for £1 and get for nothing using the £1 off vouchers. They've been £1 at Morrisons, then Sainsburys, then £1.17 at Tesco, trhen £1 at Asda and currently £1 at Iceland mySupermarket - Compare & Save 30% on your groceries We've been on free soups for months now, and have enough with long use by dates to carry on for a month after the £1 off promotion ends.

P.S. £1.57 in Waitrose who sell another of my favourite NCG soups, Smoked Haddock Chowder' where we normally get a further reduction by including it as one of our myWaitrose 'Pick your own offers' online before shopping, then buying enough to get a free newspaper, free takeaway coffees and free town centre car parking to make it more worthwhile, especially if our neighbours have given us a couple of pounds to buy them a newspaper whilst in town.

I'm not so sure. Their primary role is to provide advice on the foods to eat to control medical conditions.

Clueless1 is right to approach a forum like this - he will get 'real life' responses from people who have tried the various dietary approaches.

The reality is - it is very difficult to maintain weight loss unless you are on a constant diet and worrying about counting calories - who wants to live their life counting calories all the time?

Thanks for this. This is the sort of advice / insight into was hoping for when I asked.

This is helpful to me. It tells me several things. Some I'd considered previously, some I had not.

I am particularly intrigued by your claim that a high fibre diet caused you problems. I have found the same, and tried to combat it by actually increasing the fibre ratio, because everything I'd read, including from credible sources, suggested that was the thing to do. Likewise I've found the symptoms subside when I abandon the 'healthy' diet and go back to my regular diet. Fibre seems to be the common factor here, but I suspect that doesn't mean we should treat it with suspicion. I think perhaps, somehow, the body needs to become accustomed to the higher fibre, but preferably while there's still some good balance of gut bacteria in there.

Did you ever try again with the increased fibre?

Ultimately, what I hope to achieve, is to find a diet that isn't really a weight loss diet, but rather a diet that is about maintaining (but not gaining) weight, without having to worry too much about calories. All the estimations suggest I need approx 2200 kcals per day to stay the same weight. That's actually a lot, if you earlier right. But before I can get to that point I need to do a stint of several months on 1550 kcals per day to lose a couple of stone.

I am relying on the fact that I have solid motivation to do it. Not through necessity, as the docs are happy with everything when I lost had a medical assessment, but for my choice of leisure and passion which is martial arts. A 2 stone surplus is a lot when you're trying to fly :) It can be done, but it takes its toll on the knees and ankles a bit. I'm relying on an assumption that as my weight drops, I'll be able to train harder, and thus still burn as many calories when I'm lighter as I do now.

So the motivation is there, the long term plan is there, and the immediate term plan is mostly there, except that I need to figure out how to get past the, erm, turbulence shall we say.

No, I haven't been on a long term diet since. Maybe cut back for about a week if the scales register a gain of more than 2 pounds.

I put myself on 1000 kcals a day but at the time I working in an office job and the only outside activity was housework. Plus being female puts me at a lower need for intake. I did this for 9 months. Two beers and 1/4 of my daily allowance was gone - but oh how nice it was :)

As a side note, the same darned thing happened to me when I quit smoking years before that. So I think maybe that's the body's way of protesting? Dunno...

said to someone today, after both my dogs went to heaven, I started gaining weight. The walking of them, miles and miles did it. Have to get out more and walk, burn those calories.

These days i don't count calories, i just don't eat cakes, biscuits. It's the portions as well as what it is. In the 1980s I found a good book called the Fplan diet. I don't follow the recipes, but it changed the way i thought about food. So i keep dairy to a minimum and meats. Cut down on sugar and fats.:doggieshmooze:

Until my early thirties I could not put on weight, I was a constant 8 and a half stone. Then, suddenly, I started filling out and am now my proper weight of 11 stone.
