Newts

Hi All
The pond in our new garden is in need of a clean out, i have netted quite a bit of Algae. On almost every net full theres been Newts in the net. I have stopped now, as i dont want to do any damage.Now the water is clearer i can actually see a large number swimming about.On every visit to the Pond you can always see a Newt within a fe moments.

 

Most of the newts will leave the pond to live on land in June except the ones under a year old.

So July or August would be a good time to clean it out. You'll still be catching young newts though.

 

Kindred Spirit, thanks for the info, i dont have a issue with catching the Newts, its more a case of i dont want to upset anything.

 

How urgent is the clearout? Late summer / early autumn is generally a better time, i.e. after the main breeding season for most species but before it starts getting cold.

 

Its not urgent, it just could look better, ill just keep taking the Algae of the top and from round the Pump.
