Just a couple of pics of some early flowerers from my frost free overwintered young plants.

The first is Pink Fizz which when delivered as a small plant from Hayloft, they had literally torn/screwed off all the main growing shoots to fit the too small packaging !

Unlike the some Lady Boothby cuttings I took around they same time, which have really shot up to 3ft. these Pink Fizz seem more interested in flowering than growing tall stems ? Using Chempak no2.

The other 2 pics are of a single flower from an Angie cutting and Evita.

I must find this variety again, it's name escapes me but it came as a part of a set of 6. They were sold as trailing bedding from my favourite GC which is a fuchsia specialist. Surprisingly, quite a few of them have made it through winter safely & aren't just annuals. They were also selling bushy varieties for 50p!

Hi All. After the usual scouring the internet & pulling my hair out I have done what I should of done to start with, come on the forum for advice!!!!

Looking for a small hardy fuchsia to fill a small area around pond, size 30-45cm (1-1/12 ft tall).
Looked at what I thought is a small hardie,Tom Thumb. This is where as usual things get muddled.
            Height according to some site 30-45 cm,ideal. Yet other sites say 0.5 m - 1m tall!!! Yet other sites say 45cm -60cm ( 1:1/2- 2:1/2 ft)!!

I also looked at Lady Thumb which again is slightly too tall but some say very hardy yet others say needs protection in winter!!! I suppose in reality the winter in the south west would be milder than say up north or Scotland but you just do not know,so frustrating.
So bottom line is anyone knows of a hardy (growing in south west) that grows to about 1-:1/2 feet I would be grateful in knowing.
            Thanks

Very Nice but a lot of work when it comes to winter pruning. Picking all the leaves off etc. A labour of love but worth it.

                    Hi All,

                    Lady Boothby vs Pink Fizz

I purchased a Lady Boothby 'climber' the other year and its grown well to 6ft tall and cuttings similarly romp away, producing 2 to 3ft of quick growth from cuttings in the greenhouse this spring.

Was tempted to buy 3 Pink Fizz well rooted cuttings last summer as they are said to be almost as tall but having better /bigger flowers.

While they grew ok last summer they only got to about 18" tall and this spring they have sprouted out and as you can see put out lots of flowers, but little upwards growth , still under 2 ft?

They have only been fed on Chempack No2, which should encourage growth not flowers.

Has anyone experience of Pink Fizz, is it a slow grower and though the flowers do look like pictures I have seen of Pink Fizz , wonder if I have been supplied with something else thats not a climber ??

Edit 29/5 - found one other mention on the web about Pink Fizz, seems they were also experiencing similar problems regarding lack of height..

                    thanks

Jennifer Anne , hardy bush, but grown on in the greenhouse from a shop bought rooted cutting a few months ago.

A welcome change from the red/blue colours of most of the other hardies.

Has anyone ever grown Dorothy Hanley? Is it hardy / can I overwinter it, how big does it grow etc? I can't seem to find much out about it online.

Seems a lot of info when I google it ...?

This link gives a good description, hardy to H4, see chart below; grows to 1.5mtrs.
Fuchsia 'Dorothy Hanley' Care Plant Varieties & Pruning Advice

Its best not to prune hardy ones too low at the end of the season, but do put a covering of peat or compost etc over the crown to help protect it from the worst of the weather.

Once the frosts have gone, it may sprout from the higher stems, if not it should shoot from the base.

DH is not a variety I have grown, but have grown this one which is similar and it seems a very strong/fast grower and has survived the last two winters ok.

Trogre, Genii is a hardy, free flowering yellow foliage variety. Cut back in spring it will make a 3 to 4' mound for summer :)
