I want to purchase a climbing rose, I have several in mind which I took from a gardening book. When I visited a garden centre no one was available to explain how quick these grow. I have an arch which would look nice covered with roses along with a clematis, Ive looked at these roses and all they seem is just twigs cut back, how long before they reach a height of about ten feet? It would be pointless of me to buy one and it only grow a few inches.

    HI Dennis,

It very much depends on the particular rose-which particular colour or scent do you want?

Hi Denis.Swift. :) Its never Pointless to Buy a Rose ,Most Climbing Roses will grow to 10 feet but ,but Its all about Patience ,The answer to your Question is Depending on the Soil and care and attention It receives. Is that some can achieve that Height in One or two seasons,The Twigs you mention are the Canes .I am sure if you can let our friends here at Gardeners Corner know what Roses you have selected you will get all the help and advice you need:thumb::)

I have selected a rose called Bantry bay and another one called golden shower. The book which I got these from just say they look great with a clematis Jackmanii grown together over a pegoda or an Arch.. I shall be growing from a large pot with a reccomended soil. Other Climbing roses I should look out for should the Bantry Bay and Golden Shower be unavailable are Madam Alfred,,,,,Glorie De Djon and Zephnine Drouhin.

I have a Madame Alfred (Carriere?) and its a really beautiful climbing rose - masses of the palest pink flowers all summer and doesn't require a lot of pruning, just tidying up.

But everyone will have their favourites :)

My parents had one for years, grown from a cutting given to them and I have photographs of it covering a 12 foot long fence and smothered in blooms all summer. I finally found out what it was (they never knew what it was called) and bought one last autumn. Its already growing well and quite a few buds appearing - here's hoping for summer :gnthb:

Thank you for the brilliant info given with replies.

I went to several Garden centres today and ended up purchasing a Zephnine Drouhin. As I dont have much room in my courtyard this will have to be replanted into a larger pot, does the pot need to be a large pot or will something the size of an average bucket be fine.

Hi Dennis you are most welcome:)

Zephirine Drouhin Common Name Bourbon Rose (1868)
This is one of the classic roses, , not least the thornless stems which make pruning a pleasure. It is usually seen trained on a house wall, but mildew can be a problem where air cannot circulate, and it is better grown on a pillar, arch or pergola, and can even be pruned as a large shrub:) The Pot needs to be at least 18 inches Diameter and in depth ,The bigger the Better:thumb:Half Barrel would be OK.And lots of drainage in the Bottom, roses don,t like standing in water.:)

WISEOLDOWL, could you advise me, I have an eight foot arch in my rear garden facing north and I would like to grow a climbing rose up it, my preferences are, about 12to 16 feet long, a long flowering season and very hardy having to stand up to the north east winters with a lot of cold winds, I'm not too fussy of the colour just as long as it is really hardy.
