Here's another one for the fungus fans.
This is an old dead hawthorn stump at work which has recently erupted in these odd looking fungi.
    Any ideas?

Possibly Pete. Although the fungi in your photo look a similar shape and size, the colouring is somewhat different.
Mine don't have that brownish colouration which yours appear to have, the general colour of mine is more of a 'creamy' off-white, with bands of darker colours too.
Was going to take a close up on macro for more detail, but the camera batteries ran out.
      Will try again tomorrow.

Both could possibly be forms of common bracket fungus...Many-zoned Polypore:noidea:

Thanks Lol and Sheal, I think you're both spot on there. :blue thumb:

Interesting to read that in the past it was sometimes used as a hat decoration. Now that would make a good talking point at a wedding reception methinks.

              Here's an odd one.

I came across this while pruning my climbing rose. The rose is grown over a rustic 'arch' I made from untreated chestnut poles a few years ago.

While removing some old dead rose stems I noticed this brown growth in places on the surface of the chestnut poles. As you can see in the first two photos, in places it has engulfed the string I use to tie in the rose stems. The third photo shows where it has begun to grow around an old rose stem which I pruned out.

Haven't seen anything like this before. I assume it is some type of saprophytic fungus living on the dead chestnut wood. Any ideas?

Spotted this little patch of fungi which has just erupted in the garden in the past couple of days.

Quite unusual to see something like this in mid summer, conditions here have been dry for weeks now and these are growing in a very dry spot underneath a large firethorn. Any ideas?
