Can anyone tell me if Callaloo is best surface sown, or covered with a fine layer of compost? The pack says direct sow, but that is about it......

I sowed some a week or so ago, and the squirrels have been rooting around in that barrel, so I reckon they won't germinate now - I have another packet, but want to try and ensure that I get something this time?

Callaloo or amaranth is a nice, mild tasting, filling leaf and stalk veg.

An Indian member of the Community Garden grows the red variety annually.

They use the scatter approach and lightly rake over before watering.

I prefer neat rows about four inches apart, half an inch deep. They grow to about 2-3ft in the raised beds before going to seed.

      Thank you @misterQ :)

Almost everything else sown at the same time has germinated, hence my thinking that the seeds have gotten too far buried by the squirrels. Going to put a net up later on to stop that from happening.

The progress of the callaloo (both red and green variety) grown by our Indian member this year:

Ours are nowhere near that size - only just about getting going in fact.
