    do you believe in it?

Watching the news this morning about the flooding in Fargo (I think it was) got me thinking again. What with the fires in Australia, flooding in many countries, ice caps melting etc., is it due to global warning or just the natural progression of this planet?

I don't know. What about you?

    cheers

Only humans could have the arrogance to believe we are able to change the course of something a enormous as the planet. Yes, we have influenced things, by our ability to build on flood plains, cut down rain forests and push to extinction hundreds of not thousands of species, but to suggest we alone have changed things is madness.

Throughout human history, there have been several episodes of warming and cooling of the planet. The planet is cyclical and this is another example. Its just convenient to politicians to witter on about global warming as it a) distracts from the real issues and b) is taxable!

Hi borrowers. As far as I'm concerned, it's definitely happening. It seems that most 'experts' in this field are in agreement. Of course, the cynics will say they have a vested interest, "it pays their wages" you'll hear. However, I think you only have to look around you to see that changes are afoot. Sure, we just had a cold winter, but I seem to remember getting those all the time. These days (years), snow is quite rare (relatively) compared to years back. It surprises me really how many see it as something of a joke, after all, we ALL have to live here and is it really worth the risk to take it so lightly ? Cheers...freddy.

Well there's still allot of of people in the scientific community who disagree on the specifics although most agree that global warming is happening but unsure whether this is because of humanity or nature or even a combination of the two either way it's not going to be a good thing for us or the rest of the worlds inhabitance in the short-term...

I think that it's a combination of the both, it's the natural cycle of the planet but we're excelerateing it with over popluation, pumping fumes into the atmosphere and depleating habitats and resources that might have been able to balance things out otherwise.

We as a planet need to do something before it's too late if it's not already to give the planet back to itself so it can get on how it would have done with out us takeing and not giveing back as I don't think we do enough.

That's just my opinion and thoughts, I don't have anything scientific to back it up just the gut feeling that we as a race are destroying the planet we depend on to sustain us.

I don't for a second believe we aren't capable of being complacent about our own extinction, but I do know "the end of the world is nigh" and has been "nigh" for millennia.

Unlike Sweetpea I don't think we are destroying the planet-I think the planet is gearing itself up to destroy us. We have become an infestation. Nature has checks and balances, and we, as the human race, are due for an audit.

Nature won't discern between the good and the bad, those that recycle or those that drive huge cars either.

There are quite a few issues that need looking at - considering we're in the middle of a recession! I'm not saying environmental concerns should be ignored, but using them as an excuse for raising taxes (which will almost certainly not be spent on environmental projects) is not on. But environmental taxes are another story...

Couldn't agree more Claire. I was trying to find the right words to say similar - anyone ever thought that the recent and increasingly violent natural disasters we've seen over the last few years might be the planet trying to rid itself of excess population? Lets face it, there are too many of us now all trying to live in the same small areas of land. Even in Britain the concentration of population and industry/infrastructure is top heavy in the Midlands and the South.

Nature will win in the end, we are not destroying the planet, we are destroying ourselves.
The human race is out of balance with the world, and nothing is being done to alter that, so any tinkering that is being done now is futile.
Full speed ahead and dont worry about the icebergs.:D

Problem is we are going to take a good few other species with us.

But the planet will go on.

From somewhere in the dark recesses of my memory I seem to remember something semi fictional about the Last Neanderthal.

So, without any desire to sound melodramatic, I think yes in answer to Jo, and I think we will go out more with a whimper than a bang.

I don't know about you guys, but I find it comforting to be forgotten, to be one amongst trillions and trillions of things, and to be no more important to the world than a piece of chewed up gum.
