My front lawn is dying. I am getting big patches of dead grass. The patches are growing bigger each week. At the beginning of the season I cue the grass and run the scarifier over it. I then cut the grass weekly and I recently have ran my scarifier over it to get rid of the dead grass. I water the grass when it is dry.

Last time this happened was about 3 years ago. The whole lawn died. I scraped the dead grass off and reseeded it.

    Welcome to Gardeners Corner :sign0016:

I suspect the problem not to be with the grass itself but whats underneath.

Might be builders rubble under it.

    Similar problem here.

Bit of scraping away revealed an old tarmac hardstanding

Thank you for your reply. I can assure you there is no builders rubble underneath.

      IMG_1850.JPG Jimmyennis, warm welcome
How close do you mow your lawn?
My own lawn is basically on sandy loam and in full sun and used to dry out badly in summer in dry spells.
My solution was to raise the cutting height and to top dress in autumn or spring.
It has been very hot and dry here....You too??
So many scalp their lawns and wonder why they struggle during the growing season so raising the cut is important and can make a big difference
Watering BEFORE the lawn gets dry is important
Leatherjackets and chafer grubs can severely damage the grass but at this time of year this is not the problem
So, I would raise the cut.....weekly mowing is good....and water thoroughly. I would also apply a liquid nitrogen lawn feed a couple of days after the watering.
My own lawn is still nice n green despite the hot dry summer........high cut, a monthly feed and once a week watering

Is the ground really hard? Looks to me as though it is not retaining moisture - if you have a heavy soil that then gets hardened, it can set like rock and the water just runs off?

Maybe aerate it, and then scatter some organic material over it in stages (manure or compost)?

Did you notice any colour change when the area started to die i.e. Red, yellow?
Did the area start with patches which slowly enlarged and joined together?
Have you tested the pH levels?
Have you lifted a section of turf to see what's below?
Do you have a photo showing the lawn before you used a scarifier?
Has any lawn treatment been added to the lawn?
Has any type of chemical be used in the area i.e. weed killer?

While the weather has been hot around a month ago we had a damp spell with warmth and I noticed a common lawn disease was doing its rounds again. The increase in temps with the disease present has the ability to show the problems to a higher degree.
