:dh:Last year, for the first time, I tried to grow morning glories from seed. I got good germination and transplanted in to Pots. The plants seemed to take ok, if a little spindly, but all died when tranplanted into the final growing position. Obviously I had done something very wrong. Can anyone please help? I would love to have a display growing on a very nice obelisk I was given as a present

When were they planted out? Mine still aren't in the baskets yet and Idon't expect them out until the end of April-Mid May as from what I understand of them, they are very tender.

I wouldn't even plant the seed till mid April, and plant out early June after a good period of hardening off.
Certain types, as Lolli says, are very tender and are best not planted until its really warmed up, especially night temperatures.

    What is your location Eric?

OK, so not the warmest part of Britain, but perhaps not the coldest either.

I stand by early June for planting out and even then pick a spell of good weather if you can.:)

I would agree with Pete. Once planted out, their success depends on how warm the summer is. If its a cold summer you won't get much growth or flower, but they will do OK in a warm summer. I have had good and bad years according to the temperature. They do a lot better in the south, where it is warmer.

I have always thought of Morning Glory seeds as those best planted out directly into the ground after the danger of frost has passed in a very warm and sunny position. I don't think they like disturbance of their roots.

PS They are an invasive weed here. :)

I've had success growing in pots, but I've never planted out until June. They don't flower here, outside, until late summer

I did the same as you year before last and they were a very poor show. Last year I grew them in my s facing bedroom window and they romped away!

Might try some indoors as well then.

For anyone growing them this year, they are amongst the easiest of flowers to collect the seeds from.

Now why don't I ever think to do that? I spend a couple of quid every year on Morning Glory seeds ...

    Daisybelle,
did the flowers turn towards the window? Did the plant anyway look good from indoors as well? I fell in love with this plant growing it on my artic circle balcony, it doesn't seem to handle the northern England outdoor summers that well.
