Could someone ID this annoying weed for me please. It seems to be growing
    everywhere I look these days.
    20170828_152912[1].jpg
It had a solid mass of roots. I tried using a plant app which was useless (or my photo was!)
I'm also wondering if the only way to get rid of it completely (like dandelions) is to use a weedkiller.
    Thanks in advance

Looks like lesser celandine, did the roots have nodules?

I don't think so - I'll have to dig up another one!
They seem to be just a thick mass of (not particularly) long roots.
Do you mean nodules like oxalis (dark green)? - another one on my hate list

I've just looked up lesser celandine.
I have never seen it flower. It seems to stay in small clumps about the size of a teacup rim.

I'd agree with @Marley Farley - the little leaf in the centre has a fairly indicative curl where it joins the stem. The non-scented dog violet is my guess - it seeds itself before you even know it has flowered, and it's surprisingly tough to pull out considering how wimpy it looks.

I agree a violet, I have them and they pop up in surprising places. I leave them alone where I don't want the space for anything else ie dry shade under the conifers.
Lesser celandine is a spring flowering plant that completely disappears after flowering and pops back up the next spring.

Thank you all. I have dug one up, compared it on Google (the app I mentioned still thinks its bindweed!) - the curl where it joins the stem is a bit of a giveaway.
Maybe I won't be so brutal with it if it's not in the way. I certainly have never seen a flower.
It's nice to have a name for when I attack it when weeding
