John you need to watch more TV mate.:D

Every year about the week before Christmas we get the ex pats in Oz on the beach in Perth or Sydney saying happy Christmas to the poor gits they have left behind in the rain and snow.

Is that the only reason you want to move Christmas to June? Well it must really get to you :)

No I just hate being stuck indoors for two weeks.
If it was in June at least the days would be longer.

They even shut down where I work for the whole time, so I cant even go to work.

Its a lousy time of the year.

Why not go abroad somewhere hot to get away from it all?

The early Christian 'fathers' who decided that the birthday of Jesus would be more conveniently celebrated on the same day as the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia, also roughly coinciding with the shortest day of the year and the beginning of regrowth and rejuvenation as the days gradually get longer. It made it easier to convince reluctant believers that they were worshipping the same or a very similar god.

Aesulus, I find Poundland very useful for batteries and cheap garden bulbs, if you aren't too fussy about varieties :)

My partner's brother and family live in New Zealand. Christmas there is much more low key than here, partly because in the height of summer, lots of Christmas lights and decorations in all the shops and malls would be far too hot! But perhaps also because Christmas is essentially a Northern European tradition (if you go back to it's pagan roots - going back to rebirth again, note!) and is best suited to the cold, damp climate when the sun is at it's lowest and we all need a bit of light and celebration.

Well I guess Australia is out of the question :lollol: Being serious if we didn't have family ties I'd love to spend the cold winter months in Spain or Portugal, somewhere not too far away but with a pleasant climate, sorry no idea on costs - but can't imagine its too expensive.

Well you could get a dog?? Then you could take nice long walks and air all your complaints to fellow dog walkers!!!
I haven't liked Christmas for quite a few years now, people pushing and shoving, Erm..........what happened to goodwill? Apparently there are more arguments at Christmas than at any other time, people suffer from stress and the really desperate ones are phoning the samaritans!!!!:help:
    BAH HUMBUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our town centre has enough problems with drunken festive revellers rolling around in the gutters as it is. But at least the cold and the rain tends to dampen their enthusiasm. Imagine what it would be like if we celebrated Christmas in high summer. :hehe:

There are carved stone sheep on the roundabout at Shepton Mallet.

During last years cold winter, someone put woolly hats & scarfs on them.

If anyone has kids and has shopped kiddie stuff leaving a trail (online, membership cards)... the Stalkers start Kiddie Christmas very early in deed. We received our first toy catalogue in early August and ever since the amount of targeted catalogues has been quite amazing.
Seriously, I can't picture a person who would get all carried away with personalised pencil cases/ pyjamas/ wrapping with matching ribbons in August? Not even if they throw in a pack of musical candles (choose your favourite Carol) and a Christmas - themed can opener free of charge?
