Greenhouse: Glass or Acrylic?

Hello, I need to replace a few pains in my Grans greenhouse. I have been thinking of fitting uv protected acrylic. How good is it versus glass?

I read on here people saying that their Acrylic catches the wind and blows out ... but no personal experience. I like glass houses, me!!

 

Hi, I would fit glass but feel it would be a waste of money. Have had no problems in the last 10 years, only recently have had 3 broken pains due to next doorâ??s young kid/friends throwing stones across. But canâ??t prove it due to it being a share drying green next door.

So I thought replace the broken glass with acrylic. Or even Solid Polycarbonate but costs a bit more than acrylic.

I think I could get round the possibility of the acrylic blowing out is to stick it down with silicon.

djrock,Hi....better to run a silicone bead around the 'frame to acrylic' from inside the greenhouse,rather than bed it. That way you have a tidier finish and, should you want to remove a sheet, easy access to remove the seal.

I have acrylic all round my greenhouse, all panes all clear siliconed around and I have fitted a strengthening post across the middle which gives it more strength.

This helps me also. We bought our house and it came with a wood greenhouse with glass. It was a bit run down and we have made a few repairs. The problem is our young nephews are at the age where they just run madly around the garden and I am worried they will run in to the glass. I would like to get the lower panes replaced with some form of plastic, but was worried they would turn white over time. Is this not the case then with solid polycarbonate or acrylic?

 

I think it's worth paying a bit extra for toughened glass. It looks just like ordinary glass, lovely and clear and doesn't decay with age, but it has no sharp edges and is really really hard to break. I too replaced some panes in the old g/h with polycarbonate, but they blew out.
