That is the difficult bit - it is £120 at the moment (download direct from MS), so that coupled with your additional RAM will bring you up around the £180 mark...... getting close to new laptop territory......

Is there a reason that you want to upgrade, other than concerns about potential support?

@noisette47 you said your machine had 2.75gb of ram but I think that will be how much of the ram is being used rather than the actual amount you have in there.

It could be 3gb or 4 gb, so its best to check using the ram checker FC mentioned or just opening up the box and having a look inside to see how many ram modules you have, plus its always good to run around it and the fans with a vac to removed all the dust now and then.

Not sure about your neck of the woods but if you shop around genuine w10 can be bought for under £100, choice of 32 , 64bit or both on dvd or usb .

Like I said, FC, it seems such a tragic waste to bin an otherwise good machine. I don't need another laptop but find the occasional days spent doing paperwork much easier-going on a PC all connected up to the printer. A mini office:). I suppose the other option is to just replace the 'box' with something more up-to-date but I hate being forced into consumerism!
It's the same with cars....the French government are bringing in much tighter emission standards from January 2018 but I'll see them in hell before I give up my lovely little Peugeot:paladin:

Just a heads up if it's relevant. In case any of you get a problem.

A friend of mine, who is computer savvy, has told me that W10 have just done an upgrade to his computer and it has wiped his graphics driver and replaced it with the W10 generic driver. He now can't get the resolution that he prefers to run on.

He said that although his computer is only two years old he can't find a driver for it anymore :mute: and there's no point in him doing a restore as it will only change it back again on the next update. He said he can't find any way to stop the updates being downloaded.

FC has already said he will have a look if I get the info from my friend but my friend is away at the moment. :noidea:

ATi radeon graphics card per chance?

Go to device manager and select the display adapter. Change the driver to one already installed (Windows doesn't delete these it just replaces them), ie his old driver.

He may end up with an issue with overscan too (display doesn't fill the screen completely) and I can help there if needed

He's got around it in another way (don't know what) but is keeping your solution as a backup. He said, thank you. :blue thumb:

Good stuff. I remember it happening to me when I first upgraded to W10 (and subsequent big updates) and it is SO frustrating losing hours to get it fixed.

                                Hi,

Are you just copying the data file from windows and pasting back into windows or outputting /reading via a common program like Word etc ?

When you say it won't transfer, what is the actual message; does the W7 machine even 'see' the flashdrive ?
