Pigeons love peas as they just start emerging, they will peck off the new tender shoots. Once they get tall enough, the pigeons leave them alone.

I have planted Toms, Dwarf Beans, Sweetpeas, Marigolds and a few flower seeds this month so far, yet to do are my lettuce, cabbage, pepper and a few other things.

Just got in from planting some sweetpeas in toilet roll tubes; beetroot seed (never done those before); zinnia; mixed summer flowers; margerites; er ... a big pack with about 10 seeds in of mixed something or other, but there's a picture of a pansy on the front!! Been up to the shed to get some seeds from last year and the mice have chewed everything up - and a yucky looking grub has laid its eggs on an opened pack of sweatpeas .. needless to say they're in the bin!! We're starting from scratch a veg patch 'cause I've got some spuds on the go and a friend has given me some onion sets and Kelvedon pea seeds ... I just hope all the effort will be worthwhile!! Happy planting everyone!

I wondered why too Chopper but I must say, it does sound like a good idea. I've just thrown quite a few away though :dh: They are only in the cardboard recycle though so I can did them back out.:thmb:
Is there only certain things that can be planted in toilet rolls or more or less any seed?

It helps to stop root disturbance (which some plants resent) when you plant to their final position

i plant peas in them ,and start them in the greenhouse, when the time is ready and no frost they go straight to their planting position
on rainy days i just lift the whole tray out get a fine rain on them then lift it back in no hassle

It's seems like a very good idea, do you all cut the toilet rolls in half or leave them the full height? and do you put them onto trays so as the compost doesn't fall out?!!!

Stingo mine are full height and in small trays in big trays.

Started off my Toms this evening, outdoor girl and golden( there may be more to the name) all other plants doing well and I'm rather chuffed with what I've done so far this year

Lovely freddy, am I right in thinking also that they can be planted straight into the soil still in their toilet roll? when big enough of course.

Can I ask people if they have experienced any disadvantages to using paper based pots-rolled up newspaper, toilet roll tubes etc-I get dreadful fungal problems when I use it. I do use copper fungicide to water them in so a bit nonplussed as to the problem.

No issues when I use the same compost, same seeds in the same place (greenhouse)with the seed trays.

Anyone come across it and overcome it?
