    Hi everyone

Does anyone know of any online seed merchants who sell affordable wildflower seeds, preferably mixed?

    Cheers,
    Alexei

How big an area do you intend to cover? Are you going for a wildflower meadow (ie native grasses and flowers) or just the flowers?

Thanks for the quick reply. We're looking to put a small patch in the garden down as grass and flower mix, and a row in the allotment (10m x 1.5m) down just as wildflowers...something along those lines anyway...

why not gather our own seed in the autumn say mid July? just shake the seeds into a brown paper bag.

As the area's not too huge you could sow plants from: www.wildflowers.co.uk I have used them and they are nice people to deal with and you'll be guaranteed results, something that's not so certain with seed.

best to store wildflower seeds in the fridge for a week or so becaues they need cold to germinate. because wildlfower seeds bank themselves. if it is mild the seeds know there is no need to germinate as there will still be plenty of annual seeds dropped the previous year. But if it has been cold the seeds that have been banked will germinate. that is why the plants re colonised quickly after the ice age.

If you want any, find somebody with a Cockatiel, because their food mixture contains them and I have used them successfully in the past, having one myself. They grew to a Nice height as well.

good idea. The only the trouble is that some birdseed contains cannabis or hemp seed, which is not illegal, but if you grow it then it becomes very illegal.

There was a case a few years ago about an old lady that used to chuck the litter from the bottom of her bird cage all over the garden and all sorts grew. A freindly local copper spotted an ominous plant and warned her to destroy it before too many other saw it:)

Hi, I just made a thread about hemp, by the way, its not that Illegal, its sold in nearly all health food stores and its byproducts are sold in some processed foods liek crackers which used hemp seeds for some filler.

In UK you can acquire a license for it to grow it for things like hemp oil, or selling hemp protein powder, which is easy to find.

I read as far as "its not that illegal" when I was about to post that you need a license. You already know that though:)

The only trouble with growing hemp is that once the wrong person sees it and word gets out, you'll have all manner of people in your garden trying to smoke all your plants. Hemp looks almost identical to its somewhat less legal relative.
