Can someone tell me how much are allotments

Never thought of it before really but that might be an idea to find one (an allotment) as i only have a courtyard. I dont know anything about the cost but i quite fancy the idea of spending some time in the summer in my own.

Check out your council website, there'll be a section on there with rental charges.

 

If you get a rough patch you should ask for a free year. the costs are usually about 12 quid but if yiu have water it may be more.

 

Mine is £8.00 a year but this year had to pay an extra £20.00 as the farmer had gone over it with his tractor

 

Hi Sogovia ours are £8 per year per plot with an extra £5 per plot for water and £2 subs to use the allotment shop this is optional though.

We have two plots our original one 75ft x 40ft ish

and a now the Paddocks which is 75ft x 75ft

We are only charged two plots because the smaller plot is only 50% workable due to water logging and shade from trees.

These are private allotments and you tend to find council run ones a fair bit more expensive but better managed.

We get as much free horse muck as we wish dropped off for us all with the option of buying well rotted manure for £15 in winter which is a huge farmer sized trailer and lovely stuff.

The farmer also ploughs our plots for £15 but we don't have this done because all he is doing is chopping up the weeds which makes even more weeds in return.

I would suggest you pop around to some allotment sites near you and put your name on a waiting list as you might find yourself waiting a fair bit for a decent plot to come up, but on the other hand if you are willing to take anything on then state this and you could well walk away with an allotment the very first day like we did!

Forgot to add that we got a FREE year last year only had to pay the water rates as the guys didn't believe we could grow anything on a patch with 5ft high nettles needless to say we proved them wrong!

£29.60 per year for a 10 rod plot - thats 300 sq yards in real terms

 

Perhaps a neighbour with a neglected garden might let you use theirs in return for a bit of produce!
