Wrong size glass

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has come across this issue before.

I have some glass panes 600mm X 600mm that I kept from an old greenhouse a couple of years ago. I have a second hand greenhouse that's slightly bigger which I have twinwall poly carbonate in I would like to change some of the Poly out and replace with Glass, sounds simple but theres a catch.

The panel widths on the newer greenhouse are 700mm wide!! I always thought that 600mm was the only size available but hey you learn something new every day.

Is there any way that I can use the 600mm x 600mm panes on this greenhouse or am I as well forget about it?

I was wondering if it was possible to frame the 600mm panes with wood/ plastic but I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

Not come across it myself, but maybe 700mm fits better with the sizes that polycarbonate is manufactured.
Cant really see how you can make 6oo mm fit apart from a pretty much bodge job to be honest.

 

Just go to a window place and have some cut to the size you want.

I was really hoping to use the glass I had, otherwise I'll probably stick with the polycarbonate

 

No worries, as Pete mentioned you would have to bodge it, not really worth messing about with when glass is not that expensive for a few panes.

 

Know there are some variations, but always thought 610mm /2ft was a fairly standard sized sheet over here ?

If insulation or more breakproof is a consideration then Wickes diy ( in your area ?) sell 10mm sheets of 700mm x 2500mm twinwalled polycarbonate.
Fitted ok in my aluminium greenhouse after damage from the little "footballers" ! (mods say we must not swear )

Its £30 a sheet but the same area in 3mm hort glass is £25 based on a 610x610 sheet being £5, so not that much dearer.
Unless your glass merchant does standard 700mm pieces you might find it more expensive cut to that size.

The only downside of twin walled polycarb is its obviously not totally clear and it does reduce the sunlight little a bit, though a good thing in the summer anyway.

 

I had to replace 2 panes last week, went to glazier and asked for a standard horti glass 2ft pane, and I needed the triangular piece for the apex, which I did have the old one with a corner missing, he may have cut the triangle but they keep the squares ready cut, he informed me 610 is size now, paid £7.50 for both so square probably £5 too
