Hi clueless1 I bet you are really good in the garden, and thanks for the welcome, it looks a great site. I want to grow some veg and herbs. I only have a courtyard and a tiny plastic green house, one of those things you put up yourself. I grew some toms in it a few years ago but think that i would like to grow some other vegies. Can i just use tubs? sogovia

If you get enough sunshine to ripen tomatoes, then you get enough for a very wide range of herbs. Some herbs prefer to be in the ground as they are very deep rooted (eg Par sely), although they can grow in pots (just not as well). However there are many that will be very happy in large pots/containers. My personal favourite is Rosemary. Sage, Thyme and Oregano are great too, and all easy to look after. These are just a few examples, there are loads that will do well in containers. You could even make a feature of them, rather than just growing them purely for kitchen use. For example, maybe have a large planter with Rosemary in the middle, and low growing herbs around it, like Thyme and Oregano perhaps. As long as they get plenty of sun (as you must do if you grew tomatoes), the possibilities are endless. For veggies, if you are limited for space, why not go vertical and grow peas and beans up a trellis. Some people also grow a few veggies in containers, among more showy plants. Maybe go for fast growing salad leaves interspersed with more showy stuff. Rocket is always a winner because it grows so fast and you can sow more every couple of weeks so you get an ongoing crop right through summer. Basil is top for this, because although it is a herb, it is a great lettuce substitute (but with more flavour) and as long as you always pick the leaves from the top, the lower ones will take over, thus providing a crop for a long period. Mustard is very fast, and has a good colour, and there are veries red leaves you can grow to add colour and interest to an otherwise plain green arrangement.
:thmb:Thanks Clueless1 Some good idea's in there. I love the herbs you mention and my favaiote is corriander. The beans will be good to grow up the wall. When i had a garden i grew beans and i really enjoyed growing them. Once i tried to grow mellons and cucumbers and i put a lot of effort into looking after them. 3 cucumbers and 2 mellons. Hello Sogovia,You can grow almost averything in pots and containers. You will get lots of help here.If you go to your nearest Farmers market there is usually a stall selling herbs and the seller can tell you what they can be used for,not only the everyday like mint and sage. Joyce
