He didn’t keep the info and now wants to know what it is and how he should look after it. Obviously kept in the bathroom!

I attach a couple of photos and any help would be appreciated.

It's a variety of Vriesia, a member of the Pineapple family. In the natural state they mainly grow on trees. This one has a damaged flower spike, this is not the flower, the small tubular flowers, usually yellow, would emerge along the red spike. It will not flower again but it will produce small plants around the base, may be two or three, refered to as offsets. The main plant will gradually die and can be cut out leaving the young ones to grow in the pot or removed and grown on individually.
As far as care goes keep it just moist and always put water in the top (vase) this is where it would collect water in the natural state. Bathrooms are idea as they like filtered bright light.

Thank you so much for your reply and very informative advice.

I will pass on to my son who apparently rescued the plant from a supermarket and paid 45p.

Bargain, although the offsets may take two/three years to flower.
