Language filter on GC

Is there a setting that can be changed on the language filter I wonder?

On numerous occassions my perfectly clean posts have been filtered and had asterisks inserted into them, so you have to guess the intended word. I've seen it happen on other's posts too.

Two examples from the last 24 hours from my posts include:

'Coa rse' as in 'co**** grit' - without the space becomes co**** grit
'Pars ely' becomes P****ly without the space in it.

I can see the point of language filters but perhaps the one on here is too strict.

As you may have gathered, no filter can discern when a forbidden group of letters is grouped with others to make a different word. It's an annoyance, I know, but there's not a lot can be done about it.

You will notice when you do a Google search that a word you use may often produce a bigger word with that syllable in it - as you pointed out in pars-ley. I think for such words it would be acceptable to insert a full stop or a hyphen as I did. But don't use extra characters to enable the profane word as that would be a rules violation.

 

Just a thought (no idea if it works in vBulletin, but I assume you can edit the Profanity Filter), perhaps you could put the ones that come up often in the filter with alternatives - so change "Coar$e" to "coar-se" or somesuch [I am meaning that the first word would be the normal spelling, and the second the alternative] ... I suppose it is also just possible that putting in the word with the same spelling as a replacement may cause it to the be ignored by the shorter "a**e" substitution.

It may be important that these "acceptable words" are higher in the list than the shorter foul-words (so that they get replaced before the shorter ones)

If that works I think it would help for the newbies as otherwise they probably scratch their head wondering how they managed to type co**** !!

At the end of the day vBulletin should do something to make the blessed thing more intelligent! The fact that I can easily type a rude word with "$" instead of "S" makes a bit of a mockery of it too ... but that ain't your problem of course.

 

It's probably set in American, not English (hence 'bum' being allowed).
It should be possible for an admin to change the banned words. It certainly was when I ran a forum, but that was different software. What I ended up doing was allowing far more words than the original set, only banning 'proper' swearwords, and assuming that most people would be sensible.

(and, as it was my forum, I could ban any who weren't sensible!)
