Hello everyone. Yes a strange title for a thread on a gardening forum. Hey wait a mo! Please check out the title again. Do you recognize the connectives?

So. Yours truly has for a long time been interested in all this who-ha in the press relating to the areas of the above. I have decided it's time I made known my thoughts on the matter. Perhaps you have read bits and bobs. Please help me out. I am researching each aspect. Truly your input will be most welcome. Many thanks.

BS. I am not fat, nor do I have any issues with blood sugar levels and I eat whatever tbe mood hits me but in moderation. Don't like buying bigger pants.

I think the only difference these days is that the blood sugar levels which define the new age diabetic have had the bar lowered so many more people get diagnosed as diabetic even though their situation does not require insulin injections- as was the definition of a diabetic in the old days. I was married to a diabetic. Insulin shots and all and I can tell you these "new" diabetics are the dream of drug companies. Most of them do their management through fright and diet. Fright of the needle...

The stats are skewed. Just like now there is more spousal abuse....no wait, it's just because it is now not whispered about

 

I think it is time you made your thoughts known on the matter @Mike Allen, and then in the morning I can see if I agree with you ... I have a bit of a weakness for chocolate eclairs

 

I have after tea ive eaten a full box of four along with three yogurts and a full packet of M&Ms .

 

Actually, since DDT was banned, there have been dramatic increases in autism, high cholesterol, drug addicts and jihadi dudes...

 

Oh no ....don`t those M&Ms have G(is)MO`S in them

 

So if we still had DDT, would my cholesterol go down

 

I've been lucky. My doc tells me I have low cholesterol and great blood pressure....and I tell him it's not my fault

No. Truly I am very concerend about the state of health of many today. There is so much talk and speculation of the why's and wherefores of medical problems.
My research so far. Around the 1990's. Science reseach having been done. A possible means of increasing world production of mainly grain crops, could, might produce more of the natural farming harvest. Thus helping to feed many underfed parts of the world. This began in the 1990's. At the same time. Scientist came up with a means of altering the DNA of crops. Simply this meant that the DNA. The God given template could be changed. Theoretically this changed the lifelong genetic template. Within this new method of change in genetics. Grain for instance, now became more resilient to diseas and pests. Yes the harvest yeilds were up. Cattle grew faster. Yes a great increase. Strange to note, even today.

 

Even more parts of the planet are hungry.
Back to the 1990's It was recorded that an increase in Diabetes 2 flashed up. Also obesity hit the headlines. Come on this is too much to go unnoticed.

Question. At what point does the GMO stop working.

Do you even know what GMO means? This is cross breeding at it's most scientific.
If we have to feed more and more people, tjere musg be means to do it.

This is not about back yard gardening for pleasure.

I see you have been a member a year longer than me so I bow to your senority. However I implore you to listen to seasoned gardening members here instead of buying into the AlGore "listen but don't watch me jet around to my several mansions mantra."

Where ever you change one thing you then get another problem turn up, yes crops yeilds are up, but they have to be fed more and the need to keep pest off or the yeilds with go down even the weather will knock the yeild more than it use to

In came Holstein cows, they gave more milk but the work that had to be put in out weigh the returns and the life for the cow was less, farmers are slow going back to the good old Fresian
Think of a Holstein as a F1 car and a Fesian as a family car

Controling black grass with sprays sometimes don't work so they going back to the old ways and leaving the feild fallow

Where to begin? People have always looked to improve yields, from crops and animals, hence the large number of different breeds and varieties. In the 60's scientists were able to significantly increase yields from grain crops using traditional breeding methods, this led to more grains per plant, shorter straw, grains that were less likely to fall out before harvest and improved disease resistance. This with pesticides, and fertilisers improved yields, there was a downside diseases and pests developed resistance and evolved to attack the new varieties; pesticides and weed killers had bad effects on other creatures (Silent Spring by Rachel Carson). So the plant breeders developing new varieties and continue to do so.
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) came along in the 80's when the ability to modify the genetic code (DNA) was developed. This allowed genes to be moved from one organism to another, both within and between species. A lot of this was purely laboratory based so you got tomatoes with a fish gene for an antifreeze, fluorescent mice etc. Some made it into the wider world such as cotton with a bacterial gene to stop the boll worm, soya that was resistant to glyphosate. These were lambasted as "Frankenstein Crops" and people campaigned against them. Personally I always thought the Baron was getting a rough deal but it sounded good. Some countries banned GMOs others didn't, today a large amount of soya is GMO. This resulted in improved yields but then weed developed resistance to glyphosate, the boll weevil evolved and is still a problem. GMOs didn't always do as well in the real world as in trial plots.
More recently better understanding of the genetic code and better editing techniques allow easier and more accurate modification. Breeders have also realised that most of the traits they want can be found in species living in the wild, so there has been an increase in collecting and breeding from wild species and the surface has been scratched with this; there are something like 100+ species of banana in India and yet 90% plus of the worlds bananas are of one variety the Dwarf Cavendish which is under threat from new fungus variant, the same with cacao.
