Its someting Iv,e never done before, but I have decided not to plant anything outside until ground temp reaches 10C.
I checked it this morning for the first time ever and at about 3" down it was a rather chilly 2.1C !
Its got a ways to go yet.

Sounds a bit more technical than my test-stick your bare finger in and if it`s uncomfortable it`s too cold.

8C at about 3 inch depth in the polytunnel today. Coming up nicely as it's not risen about 2C for the last month and was only a whisker above freezing for a couple of days a week ago. Not measured the garden soil temp yet, but I guess it will only be 3 or 4 C.

There's a good list of optimimum sowing temperatures here -
    http://tomclothier.hort.net/page11.html
It's in degrees F though. I had a link to a table in centigrade but seem to have lost it!

Oooh you two have me all excited.

My Iris`s are flowering and I can see real yellow petals on my daffs.

There are also something that looks like tulips to me showing a bright egg yolk yello too.

    Maybe this is the week.

    Tip....
If you want to convert C to F or F to C use the google search bar..
    try entering
    10F to C
and theres your answer at the top of the page.
Use it the same way for monetary conversions as well, does a great job and easy

Errmmm ... I thought you had to use "in" rather than "to"? and sometimes have to stuff "=" on the end to "nudge" Google Toolbar.

    "10F IN C =" gives me 12.222 ...

note that you can do any maths / unit conversion.

so "26 in bakers dozen =" gives you "2 bakers dozen" - I kid you not!!

and my favourite "speed of light in furlongs per fortnight =" gives 1.8e12 - I haven't checked it on my slide rule though!

    Mixing units is fine too: "12 inches * 4 metres * 2 rod ="

For Gallons you need to use the words "Imperial gallons" though - otherwise you get the US ones ...

That's a useful link to temperature/ germination rates Dave W, I have just tidied up a couple of beds and put a cloche down to start bringing the temperature up. Seeds germinating on the windowsill, birds starting to twitter in the morning, my favourite time of the year :).

I think my little plot must be on top of permafrost !
Ive been monitoring ambient min and ground temps for awhile and they seem to be struggling.
I only have a ground temp of 6.5 at noon today, and thats with a sheet over it..:(
