    Hello everyone,
Having grown up and gardened on the Isles of Scilly, then moved to the west coast of Ireland, I am interested in plants which will grow in wind and salt!
I have a small, brand new garden to start work on this year, and would like to share experiences with anyone gardening in coastal locations.

    Hello Scillygirl

    Hello and welcome

I also live on the west coast of Ireland ( Mayo ) and spend time fishing from the rocks and beaches along the west coast.

Thanks for the welcome everyone, and thanks Walnut for the link. I live in Dingle, for the last 8 years right on the edge of a cliff! Now I'm more inland, about half a mile from Dingle harbour, but high on a hill, so still pretty exposed. My front garden has bare concrete block walls around it which I want to hide quickly, so am planning a mixed hedge of shrubs such as pittosporum, griselinia, etc. I have a minimal budget so am going to see what I can grow from cuttings. ( I know that won't be that quick!) The other day we went to the beach to check the boat, and someone had dumped a load of fresh Olearia hedge trimmings, so I took some and made a few cuttings ! There are many plants growing here which were familiar to me from Scilly, but I wonder why there doesn't seem to be any Tamarisk. Is it too cold for it here?
Yes I do miss the Scilly climate, particularly the DRY aspect! Hasn't been too bad here the last couple of weeks though.

Welcome to the forum Scillygirl good luck with your cuttings I'm all for watching the pennies and do try to take plenty of cuttings myself. I'm sure in a few year times you will have your garden just as you wish it to be.Hel.xxx

Welcome Scillygirl. I don't want to blow my own trumpet :ntwrth: :hehe: but as an Irishman (you know how modest they are) I thought you might like to know that I used drought and wind tolerant plants in my seaside garden, Shinglesea, at Chelsea on 2007. The judges semed to like my selection so if you are interested I can let you have the plant list.
