Also, when using the 240 pence to the pound retailers had trouble conning people by attempting to round prices off............whereas they now sell things as close to the next pound such as £1.99, £5.99, £10.99:dunno::snorky:

I was reared with imperial and still struggle with metric. There's no consistency with it. When buying various items I wrote down my conversion from imperial to metric taking a guess at what I'm buying is either going to be centimetres or millimetres. I get to the shop and find it's always the opposite required and have to find someone to convert it. Why are large items measured in millimetres and small in centimetres, it doesn't make sense! I've given up now and take a dressmakers tape measure with me it has imperial measurement one side and metric the other, all I have to do is turn it over.

Well, I can't agree, as we used to get prices stated, eg, 39/11, which to me was basically 2 quid, so there is no difference there I think.
I was just pointing out how things went up overnight due to the change of money, after that things went back to just the normal rip offs.

I went to the local Timber Yard yesterday to buy 30 lengths of 4"x 2"X 8' and the lads in the yard said that the wood came in metric lengths but, by the time they'd got the wood for me and cut it up into 6' lengths, they were talking in feet and inches.:dunno::whistle::heehee:

Timber is strange to the uninitiated, its basically sold in metric, but still imperial.
You get 25 and 50 mm, but you also get 32mm and 64mm sawn, so inch and a quarter and two and a half.
I know lots who still talk about timber in imperial, hardwood especially, often the length will be in meters but they will call it 2 inch etc.
Try buying board materials, 2440 by 1220.
An old 8 by 4 in all but name.

So you ended up with thirty lengths that were 0.61 metres too short!

It was so much easier in the old days with things like Roods. A rood is one quarter of an acre or 10,890 square feet. A rectangle that is one furlong (i.e. 10 chains, or 40 rods) in length and one rod in width is one rood in area, as is any space comprising 40 perches (a perch being one square rod).

They've even moved the goal posts with regard to the size of a football pitch!

Is a cricket pitch still one chain in length?
I seem to remember 22 yards?
And horse racing still uses furlongs.

Yes a cricket pitch is one chain in length, horse racing is marked off in furlongs. Also they still sell racehorses in Guineas 21/- s , £1.05 .
