£160000 to £180000 here. Average wage in the area is £28500 so a theoretical deposit for a single person would be £46000 to £66000!
Not such a good rental yield though! To rent the same one bed flat would cost around £650 per month plus bills. Three bed semi here would cost £280000 to £320000 yet only see a rent of £1100 to £1200 a month. So smaller properties appeal even more to investors. My point is this - I rented my first property out in '93 when I went off to Oz. Over the years I ended up with five rentals and I was seeing a comfortable 10% or more yield but it took a lot of hard graft to earn the money to place as a deposit and to renovate (as I always bought run down and renovated). Now some of my contemporaries from school have lost their parents and they invest the inheritance in a buy to let, some without finance or some with. But as either way their buying power, and that of so many more like them, is greatly increased as a result of their inheritance the values go up on properties. They do this now yet only see a yield of less than 5%. But to them it is less important as it is a bonus.

So, why would anyone work hard, if the state was going to steal anything over £30000, I mean the idea goes against all principles.

Would you also say that no one should be allowed to take more than £30000 out the country, without paying 90% tax on above that amount.

Definitely agree. Houses should never be looked upon as an investment. They're a place to live. I've argued that for years but nobody takes any notice.

Housing problem is an easy fix but would take very un pc measures to achieve it. Could be done and dusted in about 8 years.

Exactly what I said to a few of my staff when the market slumped twenty years ago. :blue thumb:

Loads of 'affordable' small housing being built round here at the moment. Trouble is not many people can afford it!

The state won't "steal" it unless the person receiving is over their allowance. Clearly your spouse or partner would be exempt, but it is up to us to spend the extra before we shuffle of this mortal coil.

Nope. It's not a tax on what you have but a tax on what you don't earn. But I do support a tax on money leaving the country.

Can anyone remember how much you could take out the country in the late 60s, maybe early 70s, they used to stamp it in your passport, think it was something like 20 or 30 quid.

                    Ahh the good old days.

That's because you were trying to stuff them into the wrong place. It's supposed to be in your Y-fronts.

We keep hearing about the deal May has done with the EU negotiators, but does anyone know what the deal is? Cant say as I've seen much explanation of it in the media.

And, bearing in mind it's been pretty much dismissed already as not likely to get through Parliament, is there really any point in it going through the process that seems to be happening in Europe this weekend?

I'm not sure why we seem to have lost all our negotiators along the wayside, unyet May her self has come up with a deal?
All seems very suspicious to me.

Without any clear understanding of the deal May has struck, I'm thinking we have been sold down the river.
