It was really cold on the golf course this morning although not a repeat of yesterdays frost. All plants bar the Canna lilies are still outside but I guess I shall have a busy weekend with the more tender fuschias and pelargoniums as well as my dahlias.

Need to get the heater for the greenhouse as well as the bubble-wrap - 'it's all go'..........

I started on the patio pots today, a 4ply layer of fleece surrounded by bubble-wrap, I'm more concerned with the frost making the rims of pots "blast out" than the effect on the plants. I've still a few to do, but I've run out of bubble-wrap at the moment. The fleece was in a huge roll, about a tenner. I'll have some left I'll be able to put over when necessary, just those few rhodos and azeleas which got a bit frost-bitten last winter.

Frost was forecast for last night so I picked the last of the outdoor toms and brought them in to ripen and dry for winter use. As it turned out we woke to 1.7C with just a slight ground frost.

Had our first one last night. Time flies, doesn't it? Seems like only yesterday I was sowing my tom seeds.

Anyway, will get out later to lift the Dahlia tubers, bin the dead bedding, and generally clear up the devastation.

Well we had the first frost of the season last night - beautiful white and crisp morning. The tuberous begonia that was still flowering was collapsed over it's pot and looking very, very sad for itself. The other few things that are up against the bricks of the house seem to have escaped, so far.

Everything was caught this morning, just zero when I went out at 7 o'clock a.m. - the fuschias, dahlias, etc all went wet and droopy so tomorrow will be a very busy day. I already pulled the Canna lilies and Agave into the greenhouse but still not got the bubble wrap installed - main job for tomorrow after the dahlia digging...

I was just thinking this afternoon how is it that pansies in pots outside look great whilst other plants die off - what is it that dictates hardiness in plants?

Frost here too this morning, so lucky that I'd got all the "tenders" in. My dahlias were blackened and droopy, so I'll need to lift most of them. Some are in quite sheltered spots and survived last winter, so they can stay there! Busy, busy.

Hard frost in West Bay the night before, lost the nasturtiums & cucurbits, beans still lived thru it. Was a bit cold sleeping out in it. Have put my thermals on.
