After all the good advice on here - we're now leaning more towards a caravan.

As usual it all boils down to money.

It struck me last night that car insurance NCB can only be claimed for one vehicle - so if we have a separate car and a motorhome we'll be paying full wack on one of them. Another good point raised  - a separate car will allow us to explore around where ever we have sited the caravan.

I may be being a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to towing - how hard can it be - if you have a fairly large/powerful car and a modest caravan?

The other thing is - if the motorhome can't get through an MOT, then it all goes. Not the case with a separate caravan;).:spinning:

Towing is easy but you have to get the weight that you but into the car and carvan just right, may pay to look at the twin wheel carvan (2 Axles) as this will help

Don't for get to go somewhere quite to learn the backing bit :sofa:

@clanless Good choice to go for a caravan and if you join the Caravan and Motorhome Club they do towing courses, not sure how much they are but if you contact them then they can sort things out for you. They also do Caravan Insurance and Breakdown Cover although you might be able to get these cheaper elsewhere.

If you join the Club they will send you a colour magazine each month which often has articles about caravans and Motorhomes they have tested so give good reviews. Also you get a sites guide book every year and this year we got a map which has all the sites and Cl’s in it.

We have had our motorhome coming up to 30 years and just love it. We spend winters in sunny Spain in the van. Have been full timing for the last 3 years and love it with no plans going back to bricks and mortar yet a while. Love the freedom it gives us, wake up in the morning and thinking where shall we go today. only one thing we miss ... is the garden but still manage to get our fix by helping out on friends and family gardens as and when we can. Love France where it is so motorhome friendly with all the Aires.

One good thing about towing a caravan the road is always clear in front of you :snorky:

Our site is a CL for the Camping and Caravanning Club, and recently I swapped my usual insurance company for the C&C club insurance. This has saved a significant amount on the premium, and I`m well happy with that :)

I know of one or two (now regular) campers who camp here who have taken advantage of the C&C club towing courses, and they have found them to be very helpful :dbgrtmb:

Should anyone be interested, if you click on ''The Moon'' under my avatar, you can have a peep at our crater gardens etc. on one of the astro weekends.

I have towed literally 1000s of miles over the years. Towing 1 or sometimes 2 horses which is way heavier than most caravans. If you take your time going round bends/roundabouts it really isn't that difficult just remember stopping distances need to be increased. All I would suggest is if you get a caravan you go out and have a bit of a practise towing it. There is nothing worse a la @HarryS than getting some idiot who has obviously just bought the new caravan and takes it out on to the road never having towed before in rush hour/ heavy traffic. They cause people to get really angry because they are so slow or don't have the manners to pull over to let the build up behind them pass. Also maybe not in the highway code but I always used to indicate left to let someone pass me when it was safe to do so...obviously where there was no left turn I was likely to be making.:rolleyespink:
If you passed your driving test after 1997 I think it maybe wise to check whether you need to take a towing test or not. Unless you have a heavy car and get a big caravan you should be ok as it's the combined weight I think which determines the need for a test. Think it's 3500kg but not sure. I had "grandfather/mother rights" so didn't need to take any tests for towing or for driving a lorry up to 7.5 tonnes but things have changed.

Once you’ve decided what Caravan (if any) you’re interested in, I’d be happy to check whether or not the car and caravan are a good match, when it comes to weights
