The Tropical House in our Botanical Garden had a special opening last evening, from 7 to 10pm as the giant waterlily was in bloom.

Here is a pic of the pond from the website. It looks round here but it is actually oval -

There are three varieties of these giant waterlilies and this is the middle one, the Victoria Cruziana.

The leaves are up to 2 meters in width and the blooms are over 20 cm wide.

They only bloom for two days, or rather nights. They are white on the first night and pink on the second.

The Botanical Garden managed to get it to bloom last year (I'm sure I posted pics of it) and again this year. There were two blooms.

Fabulous Kedi - our local paper says that them there leaves will support the weight of a 'small child'. It wasn't mentioned how small the child should be, a little experimenting with different sized children might be in order :D

You were lucky to see the blooms Kedi, not many people have.:)
The Tillandsia looks so lush, the piece that fell into my pocket last year in SF is struggling.:(
